Sustainability and safety: Dual focus for the future
.

In an exclusive interview, Rana Das, Associate Vice President of Mallcom India Limited, discusses the company’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and innovation. With over four decades of personal protective equipment (PPE) expertise, Mallcom India has consistently delivered high-quality safety solutions across multiple industries, including construction, mining, aviation, and pharmaceuticals.

As the construction and mining industries evolve and incorporate advanced technologies, how do you perceive the growing importance of safety in these sectors?
Safety is paramount, especially in high-risk industries like construction and mining. It’s a critical concern across all sectors, including aviation, automotive, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and many more. Each industry has safety norms, and companies increasingly adopt stringent Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) regulations. At Mallcom India, safety is at the forefront of everything we do.

As a company with 41 years of experience, we manufacture and distribute high-quality PPE under our brands, Mallcom and Tiger. We are present in 75 countries across six continents, and all our products adhere to international safety standards like EN and BIS. Whether it’s safety shoes, hand protection, or other equipment, we ensure our products meet the latest safety requirements to protect workers in these challenging environments.

How is Mallcom India addressing sustainability, particularly in the production of PPE?
Sustainability is a challenge in the PPE industry because the main raw materials we use, leather and cotton, are not biodegradable. However, we have taken proactive steps to minimise the environmental impact of our products. For instance, when safety shoes are no longer usable, we extract the metal and plastic components and burn the remaining materials in our incinerators. As for synthetic materials like PVC, latex, and plastic, we use them in landfills in a controlled manner to avoid further environmental degradation.

Additionally, we have implemented solar power in all 15 of our manufacturing facilities across India, and in some plants, we use biomass fuel as our primary energy source. These measures help reduce our carbon footprint and support our commitment to sustainability. We continually seek ways to improve our operations and make our products more eco-friendly.

How does Mallcom India ensure that its products meet the latest regulatory standards?
Our top priority is keeping our products up to date with the latest regulatory standards. All of our products are certified according to EN and BIS norms. We have a dedicated research and development (R&D) team that continuously monitors changes in safety regulations and ensures that our products are aligned with new guidelines.

Whenever certifying bodies introduce newer norms, we promptly update our products to comply with those standards. This applies to all our PPE offerings, from safety shoes to hand protection. Our customers can trust that everything they purchase from us meets or exceeds the latest safety requirements.

What key products are Mallcom India showcasing for the construction and mining industries?
We are particularly excited about two new product lines: a range of ergonomically designed safety shoes and a series of advanced hand gloves. These products are specifically designed for the construction and mining industries, where workers face unique safety challenges.

Our new safety shoes are technologically advanced and commercially viable, offering great value without compromising safety. We’ve made them available at key dealer points nationwide to ensure easy access. Similarly, hand gloves are designed to offer superior protection and comfort for workers handling heavy equipment and working in hazardous environments.

Can you share any upcoming product launches with our readers, especially for the mining and construction sectors?
We are preparing to launch a new range of flame-retardant garments, which will be certified according to the latest NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards. These garments are designed to meet the fire safety needs of industries like mining, construction, and petrochemicals, where the risk of fire hazards is a significant concern.

Our goal is to make these high-quality garments available to customers nationwide. With this new product line, we aim to provide comprehensive safety solutions for industries that require protection from fire-related risks.

What does the future hold for Mallcom India regarding innovation and global expansion?
The future looks bright for Mallcom India. Innovation is at the core of our business strategy, and we’re always looking for ways to improve our products and processes. Whether it’s through developing new product lines or adopting sustainable manufacturing practices, we’re committed to meeting the evolving needs of our customers.

We also plan to expand our global reach. While we already operate in 75 countries, new markets always exist to explore. We remain focused on providing high-quality, certified safety products that comply with global standards and offer the best possible protection for workers. Our commitment to safety, sustainability, and innovation will continue to drive our growth in the future.
