The new factories will replace imports and produce premium automobile steel with strengths of up to 1180 MPa, in line with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ strategy to fulfil expanding automotive steel demand and support domestic manufacturing.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, two of the world’s biggest steel manufacturers, plans to launch two cutting-edge production lines this year to produce innovative automotive steel products.
Once operational, the two factories will replace imports of high-end steel used by the whole automotive industry, supporting the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ project. In addition, all products will meet the quality criteria of their parent businesses, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. Some of the present worldwide goods will be manufactured for the first time in India.
The new lines, a Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) and a Continuous Galvanising and Annealing Line (CGAL), will incorporate the parent firms’ technical know-how and are projected to be completely operational by 2025. These two buildings will be part of the new Cold Rolling Mill 2 (CRM2) complex at the company’s flagship factory in Hazira, Gujarat.
The two plants will allow ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel to produce licensed products with strengths of up to 1180 MPa in both coated and uncoated steel. This endeavour builds on the recent success of AM/NS India, which introduced Optigal® and Magnelis® last year.
The development intends to address India’s expanding demand for high-quality, value-added automotive steel, which is now 7.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) for flat steel and is expected to increase by 6-7% each year.
Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), says “The dedicated two units mark a significant step toward our goal of providing high-quality, premium steel solutions tailored to the evolving needs of the automotive sector. With our wide range of products and services, we are well-positioned and preferred choice among automotive manufacturers. Once operational, these additions will enable us to indigenously produce new offerings that are widely recognised globally and help grow our portfolio as well as our market share. This expansion plays a key role in our strategy to strengthen the country’s steel ecosystem and boost global competitiveness, thereby reinforcing the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.”
AM/NS India is demonstrating its differentiated automotive capabilities and ArcelorMittal’s Multi Part Integration™ (MPI) solutions at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi. Six sophisticated automobile components, including a next-generation door ring and a cutting-edge battery pack, are among the advancements on display. These components satisfy the crucial needs of Original Equipment Manufacturers. MPI solutions provide numerous major benefits, including cost savings through lower manufacturing costs, simpler processes with multiple components integrated into a single design, and modular designs that can be tailored to a variety of automotive applications. These cutting-edge solutions also include eco-friendly production that corresponds to global sustainability standards, weight reduction for greater vehicle efficiency and performance, and increased safety with materials that meet Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) standards.
