Anaerobic adhesives: an alternative to conventional sealing

Anabond Limited is a manufacturer of specialty adhesives and sealants supplying to automobile, electrical, electronics, aerospace, maintenance industries and consumer market in India.
Anaerobic Adhesives
These special class of adhesives do not cure or harden when kept open or in contact with air. However, they start to cure in the presence of metal and in the absence of air. Anaerobic products are packed in special containers made of LDPE to enable air peri ability to the adhesive. This special property make anaerobic adhesives highly suitable for engineering assemblies as there is plenty of metals in the industries. Anaerobic adhesives find use for locking threaded fasteners, retaining co-axially fitted cylindrical parts, sealing of threaded components, and last but not least sealing of Flanged assemblies. The company claims that the product beat other techniques like spring washers, wave washers, serrated tooth washers, wire locking, castle nuts, and nylon ring nuts on several counts. With shear strength of 225 kgs per sq cm, anaerobic adhesives are ideal for retaining co-axial parts and can take gaps of up to 0.5 mm radically. Thread sealing by anaerobic adhesives have several advantages over normal conventional tapes. Today paper gaskets have been almost completely replaced with anaerobic gasketting compounds as they fill up surface irregularities completely. The balance 70 to 80 per cent gaps actually create problems of leakages in flanged assemblies. Anaerobic gasketting compound fills up this 70 to 80 per cent gaps, utilising the flanges by bonding and resisting transverse movement of flanges due to its high shear strength.
RTV Silicone Sealants
Most of the RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanising) silicones go into engineering and automotive industries for flange sealing due to its excellent gap filling ability as well as it’s excellent temperature resistance (up to 250º) RTV Silicones also have very high di electric strength (22 KV per mm) and hence is used in electronic and electrical industries for potting and sealing applications. While single component RTV silicones are used for gasketting, 2 component RTV silicones are used for potting application to enable water curing in larger quantities. Silicones are also used for heat dissipation by suitable formulation. Anabond heat sink compounds are basically formulated silicones used for heat dissipation in electronics.
Silicones have excellent weathering resistance and hence are used in construction for sealing the gaps between dissimilar materials
Cyanoacrylate Adhesives
Anabond cyanoacrylate adhesives are basically instant bonding mixture curing adhesives which bonds almost anything (Except polyethylene, poly propylene, viton, tetra fluro ethylene, and silicones). The high tensile strength is the characteristic feature of this chemistry. Both RTV silicones and cyanoacrylates have to be kept tightly closed in airtight containers to avoid pre mature solidification. Typically cyanoacrylates are used for instant bonding of name plates, O-Rings, flex signage’s and for wire tagging in electronic circuitry. Cyanoacrylates have very good resistance to oils and other industrial fluids. However their water resistance is very poor and hence not suitable for components in coat with water.
