BKT exhibits a strong commitment to sustainability by promoting environmental responsibility, community welfare, and employee well-being through projects such as tree planting, education, healthcare, and emission reduction.
Sustainability, for Balkrishna Industries Ltd, better known by the brand name BKT, is more than a promise; it is a concrete commitment that pervades all aspects of the organisation, from the environment to society, from the production chain to the well-being of its employees. A measurable commitment, as evidenced by statistics from the most recent Sustainability Report, which was validated by Bureau Veritas.
BKT’s vision revolves around environmental responsibility. During the fiscal year 2023-2024, almost 25,000 new trees were planted on an area of more than 48,000 square meters, actively contributing to biodiversity conservation. In parallel, the company strengthened its commitment to decreasing emissions by saving almost 28,000 tonnes of CO₂, implementing circular economy techniques, reducing waste, and boosting the usage of recyclable materials. BKT’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the environment to benefit individuals and local communities through initiatives focused on education, health, and rural and social development. Initiatives that indicate a desire to better the living conditions of the poorest people, or those who have limited access to resources and necessities.
A concrete example is the support provided to the Akshyapatra Foundation in India for the distribution of free meals to public schools: a commitment to provide a nutritious meal to more than 2.2 million Indian children every day during the fiscal year 2023-2024, including over 28,000 children living in Bhuj, where BKT’s largest production site is located. This collaboration, which continues to this day in Bhuj, resulted in the establishment of a cafeteria capable of providing 50,000 meals per day, enhancing BKT’s aid to the local community and the livelihood of the poorest members of society.
In the healthcare sector, BKT is actively involved in providing access to medical care in the most vulnerable communities by funding projects that encourage prevention, treatment, and the development of local healthcare facilities. The organisation invests in programmes that ensure basic services are provided to those in most need, including the growth and improvement of hospital infrastructure and care centres, intending to strengthen the health system and make healthcare more accessible to the general public.
On the education front, BKT is dedicated to projects aimed at raising the quality of education and making education more inclusive and accessible. The company supports programs providing teacher training and educational resources, as well as creating modern and stimulating learning environments, with a focus on the most disadvantaged groups of the population. The goal is to contribute to the growth of future generations by providing concrete opportunities for quality education.
“Our journey through sustainability and CSR practices is driven by excellence – not only in terms of economic growth, but also in terms of environmental protection and social welfare, driven by the desire to be a positive leadership example for the entire industry and future generations. This is why we assign significant resources and efforts to promoting education, health, and rural development as our contribution to creating a more equitable and inclusive society through sustainable transformation,” comments Rajiv Poddar, Joint Managing Director, BKT.
BKT has a completely holistic ESG strategy, with a significant emphasis on employee health and safety, as well as human rights protection, that extends throughout the entire supply chain while adhering to high quality requirements.
