The Centre has sanctioned 19 road and tunnel projects totalling ₹10,637 crore for Jammu & Kashmir, aimed at improving all-weather connectivity, strategic mobility, and regional economic development.
The Central Government approved 19 road and tunnel projects totalling ₹10,637 crore for Jammu & Kashmir, providing a considerable infrastructure boost. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari approved the ideas on June 23, 2025, with the goal of improving all-weather connectivity, reducing travel time, and strengthening the region’s economic and strategic infrastructure.
The approved projects total 296 km and include critical tunnels, flyovers, and road networks throughout the Union Territory. One of the most prominent is the ₹3,830-crore Peer Ki Gali tunnel on the Mughal Road, which would allow an all-weather connection between Kashmir and Jammu. The ₹3,330-crore Sadhana tunnel will provide year-round access to the Karnah region near the LoC in Kupwara district.
Other authorised projects include the 966-crore Trehgam-Chamkote road, the 853-crore Zaznar-Shopian road, and a succession of flyovers, including the 700-crore Lal Chowk-Parimpora corridor in Srinagar and a 445-crore Magam flyover on the Gulmarg route.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the clearance as a “major achievement” for his government and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Gadkari for their ongoing cooperation. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed gratitude, emphasising that the new infrastructure will increase military movement and logistics efficiency while also boosting tourism and local economies.
Political leaders from several parties, including the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), welcomed the permission, particularly for the long-awaited Sadhana tunnel. These initiatives represent a significant step forward in the region’s efforts to promote connectivity, economic development, and strategic preparedness.
