The demand for concrete and cement admixtures is likely to maintain the fastest growth, but growth in terms of application areas is expected to vary on a region-to-region basis.
Choksey Chemicals Pvt Ltd (CCPL) is an ISO 9001-2000 certified company, established in 1985 and now one of the leading manufacturers of construction chemicals in India. The core portfolio comprises of sealants, membranes, admixtures, anticorrosive coatings and waterproofing chemicals. Rehan Zamindar, Head-Contracts Division, Choksey Chemicals Pvt Ltd talks about the fast growing construction chemicals industry in India and its bright future in the coming years.
Fast growing industry
In the construction industry, from chemicals to machineries, all the things are playing a unique role. The global market for construction chemicals is forecast to record a healthy CAGR of around 8 per cent during the time period between 2014 and 2020. Asia-Pacific constitutes the largest and is also the fastest growing market for construction chemicals. In terms of construction chemical products, concrete and cement admixtures form the largest category of products. Non-residential constructions such as commercial, industrial and infrastructure are taking the lead in terms of application areas for construction chemicals. Rehan Zamindar feels, “The demand for concrete and cement admixtures is likely to maintain the fastest growth, but growth in terms of application areas is expected to vary on a region-to-region basis.”
Buying factors
The construction industry has embraced the use of construction chemicals after much scrutiny and after determining that they are of aid in offering improved properties to structures. Engineers and architects of the buildings and other projects gain from the flexibility provided through the use of construction chemicals. “Properties that can attain the maximum out of the utilisation of construction chemical include durability, compressive rigidity, surface finish, capability of enduring hostile climactic and working environments, safeguards from natural calamities and instances of fire, in addition to a general aesthetic appeal that does not demand too much from the structure. All these factors play a key role before a buyer decides to purchase construction chemicals,” informed Rehan Zamindar while explaining on the major factors a buyer should consider before making a decision of buying construction chemicals.
Major innovations
“The domain of construction chemicals is highly cost-competitive and the existing influence of several environmental or green regulations has created an opportunity for the manufacturers to develop multifunctional materials at lower development cost by efficient utilisation of waste reduction and waste recycle techniques,” Rehan Zamindar added. “The charm of this industry is an increasing number of global construction companies making a foray into manufacturing operations in India. The industry is becoming more attractive and innovative.”
Bright future for construction chemicals industry
The construction chemicals market in India is still under-developed when compared to countries, like China, which accounted for 42 per cent of the global construction chemicals consumption in the year 2014. Consumer awareness is very low in India regarding new chemical techniques and construction aids. With the economy surging ahead, the demand for all segments of the real estate sector is likely to grow. There are lot of opportunities that are sprouting up in the construction of roads, railways, airports and power. The Government has introduced many progressive reform measures to unlock the potential of the sector and also meet increasing demand levels.
“As the infrastructure development is booming in a developing country like India, the construction chemicals industry is also growing at a rapid pace. There is a bright future for the construction industry and with increase in awareness advanced construction materials will be used optimally,” Rehan Zamindar observed.
