Earthwork calculation in civil engineering is done in various methods. Different methods of calculation are adopted for different kind of work.

• Road work: cross section/ longitudinal section – trapezoidal rule
• Dam: contour method
• Irrigation canal: cross section/ longitudinal section – trapezoidal rule
• Mining: cross section/ longitudinal section – trapezoidal rule
• Site earthwork: cross section / longitudinal method and block method.

For calculation, Simpsons 1/3rd method is also used. Sometimes in section project instead of the trapezoidal method of area calculation, nett area method is used.
