We have envisioned our solutions in action and shall continue to work towards our ultimate objective of supporting India in its goal.
Bolin, an engineering company working towards localising the proven global solutions in India, has made its mark in relatively short time. Endorsed by engineering pioneers from Europe and Australia, their participation in infra projects from their inception since just over a year, has been overwhelming.
Identifying themselves as solution providers, Bolin has taken up assignments turned down by other players in market who limit themselves to material supply with very little, or virtually no engineering involvement.
Recently, for a Post Tension scope in a smart city project, Bolin have indigenously provided a solution which is first of its kind in the space of post tensioning.
The problem statement was the junction of concrete and steel, which was being treated with the chemical grouting process. By the time the chemical grouting was introduced, the Launching Gantry was already fabricated and its Post Tension system was very much in place (for which the Bars and accessories were also supplied by Bolin). Apparently, the dynamics were such, that concrete and steel parts had variable cross-sectional area and hence different diameter of bar. Despite this, the system has to act in unison as it has to be stressed as a complete assembly.
This challenge demanded the following requirements to be met:
- Minimal slip off loss during stressing
- Reusability over Multiple Pier locations
- Mechanical properties to take care of stressing loads with variable anchorages
- Delivery schedule to match the project progress timeline. (Converting to a lead time of 20 days)
After evaluating various alternatives, the stakeholders of the project zeroed down on the most feasible solution in a special connector. This special connector was to act as junction and stress transferring agent. As the diameters at both ends were different, the threads had to be variable diameters on either end. The farther end of higher diameter bar being grouted to concrete and that of lower diameter bar being stressed vertically with a stressing jack, this connector had to accommodate the stressing force without disturbing the alignment of the assembly.
Bolin successfully designed, engineered and manufactured this special connector with all the performance criterion being met, physically, mechanically and chemically. A good deal of engineering was involved in the adjustment of play in variable threads considering the resultant stressing load. Post Tension Bars being coarse threaded, the play and slip off loss is always a very relative subject even in the prismatic assembly. For this hybrid arrangement (variable diameters and different anchorages), the play was adjusted to bespoke requirement so as to transfer the stress seamlessly whilst minimising the stress loss.
The customer, contractor, erection contractor as well as design consultant are highly satisfied with the solution delivered and executed. They acknowledged the value that Bolin brings beyond a regular post tension system supplier. “And that is precisely is our vision, to be looked at as, an Engineering Solution Provider”, said their media spokesperson.
As a group of engineers, Bolin takes immense pride in this achievement. Upkar Raut, their principal founder, quoted, “Though a small development, it involved a lot of toil, engineering iterations, long-working hours, running around between workshop and project site, and all that it could encompass. The ideation and execution have been a mix of Civil, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering coupled with a lot of management fundamentals in Supply Chain Management. After the successful evaluation of prototype and execution at full scale, we are very proud to see our solutions in action. We have envisioned this and shall continue to work towards our ultimate objective of supporting India in its goal, ‘Infrastructure-Second to None’.”
