Tata Steel UK has once again partnered with JASO Industrial Cranes to support a landmark shift toward sustainable steel production at its Port Talbot plant — the largest steelmaking facility in the UK.
Tata Steel UK has chosen JASO Industrial Cranes again, this time to help with the transition to a more sustainable manufacturing strategy at its Port Talbot plant, the UK’s largest steel production facility. JASO will deploy 7 steelworks cranes to service various vital parts of the new industrial complex as part of the company’s ambitious decarbonisation strategy.
This project, led by a 2023 agreement between Tata Steel UK and the UK Government, is the largest investment in the country’s steel industry in decades. The company will install a modern Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and two ladle metallurgy furnaces, resulting in a 90 percent reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to 5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year.
JASO Industrial Cranes will provide two 80-ton scrap cranes to feed the new Electric Arc Furnace via a conveyor system, three 500-ton steel mill cranes to handle liquid steel ladles, and a 105-ton auxiliary hook, as well as two 35-ton cranes for electrode maintenance operations.
This relationship is in addition to JASO’s current connection with Tata Steel. In 2019, JASO delivered the same Port Talbot factory with a 135-ton capacity, 41-meter-long slab crane and a 500-ton converter loading crane, cementing its position among the world’s leading builders of large cranes for the steel industry.
This new order has become one of the most significant in the company’s history, both in terms of volume and strategic and industrial significance. With this new order, JASO Industrial Cranes demonstrates its technological leadership and unwavering commitment to decarbonising the steel sector.
Raúl Fernández, Marketing and Sales Director from JASO Industrial Cranes, says, “We are proud to continue to provide high-level engineering solutions for industrial projects of international reference and to contribute actively to the transition towards a more sustainable steel industry.”
Stuart Lloyd, Project Manager for the Cranes Project, says, “We’re excited to strengthen our longstanding partnership with JASO on this crucial part of our £1.25 billion green steel transformation. Back in 2019, we worked with JASO to replace our 60-year-old North Charging Crane, which lifted hot metal ladles to charge the Steel Plant’s converters with molten iron. We’ve built on the lessons learned from that project to help guide this exciting next phase of our green steelmaking journey. These seven new, high-capacity process cranes will play a pivotal role in connecting different parts of our cutting-edge Electric Arc Furnace facility, enabling low-emission steel production in South Wales for many years to come.”
