JK Tyre & Industries, a prominent player in the Indian tyre business, has become the country’s first tyre manufacturer to receive the renowned International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus for its Chennai factory.

This certification demonstrates the company’s commitment to incorporating sustainability into its manufacturing processes and fostering a more ecologically responsible future. To achieve ISCC Plus certification, various requirements must be met, including raw material traceability, adherence to environmental rules, ecosystem preservation, labour and human rights protection, and the promotion of sustainable economic development. The certification body’s Indian counterpart, situated in Kolkata, completed a comprehensive final audit for this certification.

Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), JK Tyre, says, “Green manufacturing embodies our commitment to sustainable development. By reducing our carbon footprint and utilising resources judiciously, we have consistently set industry standards over the years. This recognition is a significant milestone for JK Tyre and motivates us to continue our dedication to sustainable practices.”

JK Tyre plans to become a carbon-neutral brand by 2050 and cut its carbon intensity by 50 percent by 2030. The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has certified the company’s commitment to reducing total greenhouse gas emissions.

The JK Tyre Chennai plant was recognised as a zero-liquid discharge facility in 2021 and received the title of “National Energy Leader” at the 21st National Award for Excellence in Energy Management in 2020. The International Research Institute for Manufacturing (IRIM) recognised it in 2017 for its green manufacturing processes and commitment to sustainability. In addition, since 2015, the plant has achieved the CII’s “Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” distinction six years in a row.

The ISCC Plus (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) is a voluntary certification programme for bio-based and circular (recycled) raw materials. The certification is issued after a thorough verification procedure that ensures conformity with ISCC requirements, including the traceability of certified materials along the whole supply chain, from origin to completed product.
