Two Liebherr tower cranes are helping to carefully restore the Parador de Santiago de Compostela, one of Galicia’s most recognisable cultural treasures. The site provides difficult logistical and technical constraints due to its central metropolitan location, limited area, and heavy public traffic. The 71 EC-B and 125 EC-B Flat-Top cranes are proven to be useful due to their precise control, compact size, and low noise emissions. The project is part of a national repair drive to preserve ancient buildings across Spain.
Two Liebherr EC-B tower cranes are now being utilised to complete the massive restoration of the ancient Parador de Santiago de Compostela. Maga Vigo supplied the 71 EC-B and 125 EC-B cranes, which are supporting the complex building work of the Plaza del Obradoiro, located opposite Santiago’s renowned cathedral. Because the location is within a protected heritage zone, the project necessitates extreme precision and attention to its surroundings.

Crane technology meets cultural heritage
The location is one of Galicia’s most identifiable landmarks. Originally a pilgrim hospital, the building is now a prestigious five-star hotel with the greatest revenue in Spain’s state-owned Paradores hotel network. The restoration work comprises renewing the facades facing the Plaza del Obradoiro and the building’s western side, repairing the Renaissance courtyards, renovating the ancient cornice, and preserving the royal chapel and its dome. The goal is to maintain the building’s cultural value while also making structural and technical upgrades.
The Liebherr 71 EC-B and 125 EC-B cranes operate at heights of 36 and 52 metres, respectively, with jib lengths of 50 and 58 metres. Because of their compact size, precision control, and minimal noise emissions, both cranes are ideal for usage in sensitive, heritage-protected regions with considerable tourist traffic. The EC-B crane’s Flat-Top design improves efficiency and on-site safety, particularly in roof and facade work.
Contributing to the preservation of Spain’s cultural heritage
This project is part of a nationwide restoration effort spearheaded by the state-owned Paradores hotel chain. In its first phase, some 14 million euros will be invested in the rehabilitation of various heritage-listed properties, including the Parador de Santiago. The plan will restore 40 ancient structures across twelve of Spain’s autonomous communities and the city of Ceuta. The construction of the Parador de Santiago is scheduled to take around 19 months.
“To be part of one of the most significant restoration projects of Galicia’s cultural heritage is a great source of pride and joy for us,” says Jesús Gañete, Managing Director of Maga Vigo. The project is also a special occasion for Gruas Norte: “Taking part in the restoration of a national monument in our home city of Santiago de Compostela means a great deal to our entire team.”
