Two strong Liebherr cranes are being utilised to construct the 200-metre-high NKT Tower 3 in Karlskrona, southern Sweden, assuring speedy development. The tower rose 2.6 metres each day thanks to a shift work method, reaching its maximum height in 90 days.  Liebherr provided the project with specially calculated, specialised crane solutions to enhance efficiency.

Karlskrona has seen the rapid growth of an amazing edifice.  The NKT Tower 3 is Scandinavia’s second-tallest tower, at 200 metres tall.  Two Liebherr cranes, a 542 HC-L 12/24 Litronic and a 258 HC-L 10/18 Fibre, are essential components of this massive building project. The Skanska-built tower will be a crucial part of the world’s largest high-voltage submarine cable plant, supplying wind turbines and solar parks with essential components. The NKT Tower 3 is an engineering marvel, weighing in at  28,000 tonnes.

Liebherr Tower Crane Centre and Tower Crane Solutions provide implementation support

A high-performance crane solution was required to meet the extremely tight construction schedule of 90 days. To enable speedy construction progress, the Liebherr Tower Crane Centre (TCC) deployed Liebherr 542 HC-L and 258 HC-L cranes from its rental fleet.

“To secure 24/7 operation, we moved key spare parts, such as a new fibre rope and various modules, directly onto site in advance so that time isn’t lost if these are needed,” says Stefan Gröber, Head of TCC Used & Rental.

In addition, Tower Crane Solutions (TCS), Liebherr’s project department for big and unique projects, supplied thorough calculations for optimal tie-in geometry and made the necessary tie bars available through the Tower Crane Centre. The climbing steps were also meticulously planned to ensure a smooth construction procedure. An ideal crane setup, including hoist rope lengths, power supply, and tower bracing, was designed expressly for the project.  TCS also provided structural data for foundation loading and tensioning forces, and they collaborated with the Tower Crane Centre to coordinate tie-in geometries. This customised solution successfully matched the project’s stringent criteria.

The project was completed on schedule thanks to great collaboration between TCC, TCS, and the corresponding side in Sweden, Fredrik Funke, Head of Tower Cranes Skanska South District, and Project Specialist Anders Ekström of Ekström Lyftkonsult AB.

Fast construction progress with a four-shift system to achieve spectacular heights

Two luffing jib cranes, a 258 HC-L 10/18 Fibre and a 542 HC-L 12/24 Litronic, were employed on site, with final tower heights of 213 and 210 metres, respectively. The tower was built at an incredible speed.  The structure expanded by an average of 2.6 metres per day in just three months, thanks to a four-shift arrangement and round-the-clock operations. The construction measures 23 m² and has a total capacity of 112,445 m³, which is similar to 45 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
