The NHAI has taken the effort to improve road safety and has published recommendations for correcting accident-prone areas on the National Highways by putting temporary fixes in place. In accordance with these regulations, NHAI Project Directors are now granted the authority to rectify accident-prone sites recognised and advised by the State Police Chief of the relevant state or by the District Road Safety Committee for a maximum of ₹. 10 lakh per place. The relevant Regional Office has been given authority to take short-term actions that could cost more than ₹. 10 lakhs and up to ₹. 25 lakhs.
The rules previously provided by NHAI, which stated that Project Directors might authorise the correction of MoRTH-notified blackspots using short-term solutions up to a value of ₹. 25 Lakh per black spot, do not apply to these financial authorities. It is also possible to combine several accident sites related to a project while procuring the works.
As specified by the guidelines, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways notifies black spots. However, in addition to the “black spots” flagged by MoRTH, NHAI has taken this proactive action to address accident-prone sites with short-term fixes in order to improve road safety and user convenience on the National Highways.
Short-term measures include installing pedestrian amenities including zebra crossings with advance warning signs, crash barriers and railings, junction enhancements, solar lights/blinkers, road signage, and traffic calming measures, among other things. The NHAI is dedicated to provide a safe, easy, and seamless travel experience for all commuters on the National Highways, with one of its major focuses being to increase highway safety.
