Polyurethane based waterproofing technology for industrial projects

Polyurethane based technology has some unique features which enabled us to overcome the challenges against waterproofing of structures where heavy duty waterproofing was required.
Till recent times, it was believed that APP membrane waterproofing and acrylic polymer based cementitious waterproofing coating systems are sufficient for waterproofing of all types of terraces in residential and industrial projects. By different studies, it was found that the life of these waterproofing systems in industrial projects were not as durable as in residential projects. It was mainly because industrial roofs are under constant vibration and thermal variation due to huge installation of machineries which run most of the time and in many cases 24/7.
“There was a need of some advanced waterproofing system to sustain the industries of immense importance like NTPC’s thermal power projects against any water leakage. Then a revolutionary waterproofing system was developed based on polyurethane,” observes Sukanta Mallik, Assistant Vice President, CICO Technologies Ltd.
Feature
Talking about the unique features of the polyurethane based technology, Mallik says, “Polyurethane based technology has some unique features which enabled us to overcome the challenges against waterproofing of structures where heavy duty waterproofing was required like in industrial roofs under constant vibration, landscape areas over podium slab, terrace gardens.”
Some of the unique features of polyurethane based technology include:
• Forms a seamless elastomeric protective and waterproofing membrane on drying.
• Being viscous, it can be easily applied on vertical surface and has excellent adhesion to dry as well as primed surfaces of concrete, tile, plaster, masonry, mastic coating and metal.
• Resistance to water, alkalies; with an inherent properties of anti-fungal growth.
• Compatibility with almost every construction material.
• Flexible enough to withstand wide range of thermal expansion and contraction of structure.
• Fast and easy application eliminating construction delays and is labour saving.
• Crack-bridging capacity 3-5 mm.
Incorporating technology
CICO, with the help of its strong R&D division, launched high build Elastomeric Waterproofing Membrane Coating based on polyurethane in the name of Corchem 206 I. It is a single component, high solid content moisture cured polyurethane based tar extended elastomeric protective coating system, ideally suited for waterproofing of industrial roofs, walls, terrace gardens and foundation and conforms to ASTM C-836-03 and ASTM C 898-09.
Latest innovation
Highlighting the latest innovation of the company, Mallik says, “Our Corchem range, Corchem 206 I, Corchem 210 I and Corchem 60 I are the latest innovations and are being widely accepted at all major construction projects like real estate, industrial, power plants and metro rail.”
