“The construction equipment procurement methodology has changed in the recent years. Now the equipment procurement is majorly based on the reliability of the equipment and the past performance of the equipment in use. This current trend encourages the quality equipment manufacturers to maintain the quality of the equipment and also continuously upgrade to the latest technology being adopted internationally,” said Rajesh Kawoor, Vice President (Sales and Marketing), Simem Construction & Environmental Engineering Pvt Ltd.
Buying factors
Talking about the major factors a buyer should consider before making a decision of buying construction equipment, Kawoor says, “The major factor a construction equipment buyer should consider is the reliability of the equipment. The performance of the equipment is also important as this is converted to higher productivity. One should also consider trouble free life of the equipment, which will make the buyer understand as to what is his investment on the equipment related to the production in a long-term. The maintenance cost of the equipment should also be taken into consideration, which directly affects the operational expenses.”
Performance of equipment – driving factor
Focusing on the factors driving the procurement decision making apart from pricing, productivity and durability, Kawoor says, “The procurement decision is driven by one major factor which is the references of the equipment users and their recommendations. With the strong references, the equipment purchaser is assured of the performance of the equipment. The operation and maintenance cost also should be lowest considering the trouble-free operation of the equipment.”
Buy or lease?
Stressing on the factors a buyer should consider while determining whether to lease or buy construction equipment, Kawoor says, “Whenever a buyer wants to decide whether to rent the equipment or buy the equipment, he should consider the duration of the project for which, he has to use the equipment. If the equipment will be used only for a shorter duration, his buying or investing on the equipment will not be justified. In this case he should invariably rent the equipment. If the duration of the work is long, then buying the equipment becomes feasible.”
A buyer should also consider the future work he may take up. “If a buyer is likely to take up similar work where he can use the same equipment then buying or investing on the equipment will be justified. The buyer should also consider his resources for maintaining and operating the equipment. If these resources are not available with him then renting is the best solution,” Kawoor adds.
