SAIL’s specialised steel empowers India’s defense, fortifying indigenous naval frigate construction and self-reliance.
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a prominent player in India’s steel industry, continues to bolster the nation’s defense capabilities by delivering the entire requisite quantity of special steel plates necessary for constructing the seventh frigate ship as part of the indigenous P17 A Project for the Indian Navy. This reaffirms SAIL’s commitment to fostering self-reliance in the defense sector.
SAIL has become a vital collaborator in this venture, contributing approximately 28,000 tonnes of special steel plates for all the vessels involved in the project. These specialized steel plates supplied by SAIL exhibit exceptional qualities such as high strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, making them exceptionally suitable for naval applications. Notably, the company also furnished an equivalent amount of special steel for the construction of the recently launched sixth frigate, named “Vindhyagiri,” which was inaugurated by Draupadi Murmu, the Honorable President of India.
The seventh frigate, a notable milestone in India’s maritime security, represents the fourth warship to be built by M/s Mazagon Dock Ltd. Its official launch, scheduled for September 1, 2023, will be officiated by Jagdeep Dhankar, the Honorable Vice President of India, underscoring its significance.
The overarching goal of the P17 A Project is to construct seven cutting-edge frigates for the Indian Navy, with four of these vessels being constructed by M/s Mazagon Dock Ltd and the remaining three by M/s GRSE.
SAIL has a storied history of providing unwavering support to India’s defense sector through its top-tier products and services. Beyond its contributions to the P17 A Project, the company has played a pivotal role in supplying steel for various other defense initiatives, including the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier, warships such as INS Udaygiri and INS Surat, and the Dhanush artillery gun, among other critical endeavors.
In essence, SAIL’s dedication to fortifying India’s defense infrastructure remains unwavering, reinforcing its indispensable role in bolstering the nation’s security apparatus.
