In this article, we delve into the environmental considerations shaping the trajectory of HM adhesives and highlight industry efforts to minimise their ecological footprint.
The move towards sustainability is one of the most critical developments in hot melt (HM) adhesives. Due to environmental concerns, eco-friendly adhesives are becoming increasingly in demand. Manufacturers are putting more and more effort into developing adhesives with less of an impact on the environment. This article discusses the future of hot melt adhesives, focusing on environmental concerns that influence this rapidly evolving industry.
Hot melt adhesives, a global adhesive solution, have been addressing environmental concerns since their introduction to the market in the 1950s. They now cover between 15 percent and 21 percent of all adhesives produced and consumed worldwide, serving various sectors including bookbinding, furniture, electronics, consumer products, packaging, construction, and healthcare.
Most base polymers used in hybrid melamine adhesives (HM adhesives) now available on the market come from petroleum resources. Examples include ethylene vinyl acetate, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyolefins, and block copolymers of styrene, butadiene, or isoprene. The basic resin generally significantly impacts adhesion strength, and cohesion strength is the most highly desirable property of the HM adhesive.
It is possible to get better adhesive performance and lower emissions by lowering the temperature necessary for applying HM adhesives, reducing thermal deterioration and requiring less energy. One path towards sustainability is a lower application temperature. In recent years, manufacturers have made HM adhesives entirely bio-based, sustainable, and biodegradable. This move aims to reduce their reliance on limited petroleum resources while ensuring 100 percent recyclability for packaging applications. Researchers have studied various bio-based cohesive polymer substitutes, including lactic acid-based polymers, starch- or cellulose-based polymers, lignin, protein-based polymers, and bio-based polyamides. Tall oil resins, rosins, rosin esters, polyterpenes, and hydrocarbon resins are currently the most common tackifiers. The distinctive features of polylactic acid and polycaprolactam HM adhesives are excellent hot tack and a combination of a long open time and a moderate setting time. One can also create biodegradable HM adhesives for food packaging applications using the same copolymer in the same molar ratio.
Like many other industries, the adhesive industry is under increased regulatory scrutiny, particularly regarding emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the usage of toxic substances. Further advancements in adhesive composition and application techniques will be necessary to ensure that future HM adhesive breakthroughs meet these regulatory frameworks. Global trends increasingly demand high-performance materials and prioritise environmental sustainability, reflecting direct alignment with progress.

Each structure meets the requirements of design stipulations and exceeds customer expectations for utility and usage, along with the rapid development of industrial infrastructure. We have used the most advanced materials, paints, and technologies to ensure that our structures stand the test of time, environment, and work conditions. A testament to our product quality is the repeat orders from our customers, not for one other shed but multiple ones.
What are the key benefits of using your Pre-Engineered Buildings in the context of the construction and infrastructure sectors?
The biggest benefit of a Pre-Engineered Building is its versatility. The ability to mould the structure to suit every customer’s need is best achieved through a PEB Structure. There is increased demand for green buildings and surging demand for reduced construction time and costs. The versatility of design, ability to encompass many features, speed of construction, and, above all, value for money are the most sought-after features of PEB Structures.
The largest structures, such as the Vehicle Assembly Building of a spacecraft, aircraft hangars, and Industrial structures for every type of manufacturing and service, and the smallest structures, like affordable housing, can all be done in PEB. PEB Structures are the most cost-effective and dynamic solution for most structural constructions.
Can you discuss the role of advanced technologies, such as high-definition fibre laser cutting and CNC machines, in manufacturing your PEBs?
Technology helps improve products, and PEB Structures are no exception. There has been a huge change in the PEB scenario over the years. The use of the latest software, types of machinery, testing methods, and erection practices has ensured that the PEB structure of today is high precision, quality, and speed of manufacturing, very cost-competitive, strong, durable, and capable of incorporating a large number of features.
BSIL uses the latest software, like MBS, to design structures and TEKLA to detail the individual components of the structure. Most of the production is done via machines like CNC Laser Cutting machine, CNC Plasma cutting machines, CNC Shearing machines, CNC “H” Beam Welding machines, CNC Purlin and Girt manufacturing machines, CNC downtake pipe manufacturing along with SPMs like fabrication jigs, threading by Chasers on sag rods and anchor bolts, CNC Punching and CNC Sheet profiling machines. The use of modern technology machines helps us improve quality, shorten delivery timelines, and provide better aesthetics.

Navigating the challenges and milestones of projects at Mumbai and Bangalore International Airports, this interview sheds light on the essence of precision engineering and innovation in the roofing and cladding industry.
Can you share some insights into the challenges and achievements associated with the Delhi and Hyderabad International Airport and Mercedes-Benz facilities projects?
We have encountered unique challenges and celebrated notable achievements across projects at Delhi and Hyderabad International Airports, as well as with Mercedes Benz facilities. Notably, our Bangalore Airport project stands out as our recent pinnacle achievement. Over the past year, we successfully delivered five projects, including Bangalore and Goa airports, collaborating with esteemed contractors like L&T and Shapoorji. Although we’ve made strides in enhancing tender specifications, there’s still room for improvement.
Crafting meticulously designed roofs to meet stringent requirements for warranty, sound, and leakage tests is a testament to our commitment to quality. Despite facing the challenge of aligning our designs with sometimes inaccurate government tenders, we diligently adhere to climatic reports and stringent testing facility requirements. Our technical presentations to clients have been instrumental in securing larger projects such as Navi Mumbai Airport and a project in the Maldives, providing us with a competitive edge.
Our success is largely attributed to the expertise and attention to detail of our experienced workforce, who consistently deliver on technical specifications. We have observed a growing demand from clients for warranties, efficient water flow, and measures to reduce sound and heat, areas where we continue to innovate and improve. While progress has been made, we recognise ample room for further advancement in meeting evolving client needs and industry standards.
What are some of the latest technologies and materials you are using in your roofing and wall cladding systems?
We introduce the latest technologies and materials in our roofing and wall cladding systems, focusing strongly on client requirements. For example, the Navi Mumbai Airport project involved rigorous testing of coils and other materials at the manufacturing facilities itself and on-site for water leakage. Technologies enhance design and material performance, allowing customisation based on needs such as high wind resistance, where sheet thickness and purlin spacing are adjusted accordingly. At the newly opened Bangalore Airport, the purlin spacing was three meters compared to the standard 1.4 meters, and we had to use a special deck imported from Germany for the same. Our vast industry experience, bolstered by our parent company, KALZIP, ensures we provide superior solutions. This expertise, coupled with our attention to detailed requirements and execution of the same that sets us apart in the market. Our advanced installation techniques backed with 30 years in the industry execute the roofing system as per approved drawing from clients.
Could you describe the most critical aspects of the installation process for metal roofing systems to ensure longevity and performance?
The installation process for metal roofing systems hinges on detailed specifications and client requirements. For longevity, aluminum Roof from Kalzip are used for 50 years and zinc from VM Zinc are used for 75 years. We also offer special roofing systems for FM Requirement with tests done in the United States. Insurance, material quality, and extensive experience ensure optimal performance, offering clients a wide range of durable design options.
How do you manage thermal expansion and contraction in metal cladding systems to prevent structural issues?
To manage thermal expansion and contraction in metal roofing systems, we insist on precise structural alignment, especially purlins, during finalisation of the orders. Proper purlin leveling is crucial to prevent water accumulation and ensure the performance of the roof. We incorporate specially designed expansion joints sourced from Germany into our systems for building expansion. While expansion management is important, the critical aspect is handling and leveling the structure accurately. Many companies need to pay more attention to this, leading to unsatisfactory outcomes. Our meticulous attention to structural integrity and expansion design ensures optimal performance and customer
satisfaction.
How does your company ensure compliance with safety standards and maintain high quality in its projects?
Our moto is first safety then quality and then progress. We ensure compliance with safety standards by collaborating with clients to understand their specific requirements before starting a project. Each site has dedicated safety officers. For example, at Navi Mumbai Airport, we adhere to the distinct safety protocols of clients like Adani and L&T, ensuring rigorous safety adherence throughout the process.
What trends do you see shaping the future of India’s roofing and wall cladding industry? How is your company preparing to stay ahead of these trends?
While India’s roofing and wall cladding industry currently sees no major innovations, customisation remains key. For instance, Adani required dual-colour roofing panels for Navi Mumbai Airport, and for Bangalore Airport specified three-meter purlin spacing. Our company stays ahead by importing cutting-edge technologies from Germany, ensuring we meet evolving client demands. Collaboration between architects and us is crucial to address potential issues arising from vague tender specifications. We educate clients on essential features like gutter installation and roof openings, emphasising the importance of proper design elements for project success. Continuous adaptation to client needs and proactive communication distinguish us in the industry.
How does your company handle incomplete roofing specifications in private sector projects and overcome government and airport authority contract challenges?
With 70 percent of specifications often accurate and 30 percent open to interpretation, many contractors prioritise low bids over quality. Architects should leverage our 30 years of expertise to draft comprehensive proposals, ensuring successful roofing projects. Collaborating with esteemed clients like GMR, L&T, and Adani, we excel in private-sector projects. However, in government and airport authority contracts, the lowest bidder prevails, highlighting the need for improved specifications akin to foreign standards. By bridging this gap and advocating for quality-driven approaches, we aim to elevate industry standards and deliver superior roofing solutions for all stakeholders. The services we provide to the architects before floating the tender include putting in correct specifications, shop drawings, BOQs, required tests, and warranties for the roof. We expect architects to call on us to suggest whatever is required to make a high-performance roof before making a tender so that the tender is accurate.
We offer the full systems to our clients that is Roof, Gutters, Roof Ventilators, detailed for Sky light, Roof Openings, etc.

Floods are among the most frequent natural calamities in India. India has witnessed several riverine floods historically that have affected millions of people, caused loss of lives, and damaged infrastructure and agriculture.
An increasing number of flood events in recent times has heightened the importance of flood protection works and the raising of embankments in urban and rural plains. The high tractive shear stress of flowing water and the migration of soil particles lead to the progressive erosion of river banks. The damage to the natural banks reduces the bund height and may let floodwater spill out of its banks, causing floods.
The river Brahmaputra has been the lifeline of northeastern Indian states for ages. This mighty river runs for 2880 km through China, India, and Bangladesh. Every year, the northeastern state of Assam experiences huge losses due to devastating floods in the river Brahmaputra. Tinsukia Town, located in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra River in the state of Assam, experiences significant damage due to the floods during the monsoon season. The high intensity of floods in the Brahmaputra River and the steep topography of the region make the problem more complex and severe.
To provide a safeguard against the frequent floods in the region, the banks of the river Brahmaputra near Tinsukia needed protection at a few stretches while providing sustainable anti-erosion measures.
Solution
In river training projects, the conventional use of large boulders poses significant challenges. The mobilisation of substantial quantities within a limited contract period proves difficult and expensive. Furthermore, the extraction of such vast amounts of stones adversely impacts environmental equilibrium. The transportation and handling of these materials to the worksite necessitate heavy machinery, adding logistical complexities.
TechFab India’s innovative approach offers a compelling alternative. Geotextile bags, filled with locally available sand, emerge as a cost-effective solution, particularly in soil erosion control. The work was carried out on the left bank of the Brahmaputra River for a total length of approximately 700 m, where the river bank was dressed to a slope inclination of 2H:1V for the maximum protected bank height of approximately 10 m.
The geotextile bags (1.03 x 0.70 m in size), made of nonwoven polypropylene 400 gsm, have been selected for river bank and bed protection. These structures, permeable in nature, not only prove economical but also effectively control sedimentation. By utilising locally sourced materials, the project ensures sustainability while minimising the environmental footprint associated with conventional methods. TechFab India’s geotextile bags solution stands out as an efficient, eco-friendly, and economically viable choice for river bank protection in Tinsukia, Assam.
Installation of TechFab geotextile bags
The installation of geotextile bags followed a specific sequence. Initially, the area was set out according to the drawings. Geotextile bags and the necessary filling material were mobilised to the project site. The excavated topsoil was then disposed of by tippers to a suitable distance from the bank side to reduce the overburden of the bank. Slope formation was conducted with necessary ramming to remove any undulations, correcting it to the desired slope before laying the nonwoven geotextile.
A layer of nonwoven geotextile was laid along the desired slope. This geotextile acts as a separator and filter at the interface of the embankment soil and protection works, helping to release pore water pressure by allowing the passage of water and trapping soil particles. Following this, the geotextile bags were filled on-site with locally available sand, adhering to the standard technical specifications of the project. Once filled, the geotextile bags were measured to confirm they met the desired weight and thickness specifications.
The bags were stitched using high-strength polypropylene multifilament (PPMF) yarns as per the standard technical specifications. For convenience, the bags were stored in batches or suitable multiples based on the available space at the site. The laying of geotextile bags for the launching apron was carried out when the river was in a lean flow condition or with the help of small boats to complete the activity on time. The placement of bags was supervised by the site in charge, with the work inspected periodically by the Authority.
Conclusion
The project was completed successfully and performed to the intended purpose, to the satisfaction of the client and contractor. The implementation of TechFab Geotextile Bags successfully mitigated erosion, providing sustainable protection to Tinsukia’s river banks. The project showcased the efficacy of innovative geotextile solutions in challenging environments, ensuring the long-term resilience of the region’s vital ecosystems and infrastructure.

With the introduction of the new CAT C13D engine platform, how does Caterpillar ensure compliance with the latest emission standards, such as BS-VI, while maintaining optimal performance and reliability?
The Cat® C13D platform is a worldwide enterprise platform that adheres to the latest emissions standards via the appropriate after-treatment systems in the relevant sectors. The C13D would leverage the technological and design solutions already designed for parts of the world that currently fall within stricter emissions regulations for wheeled applications in India. The C13D will also utilise similar technologies and design solutions for tracked applications as they become more emissions-regulated. Meanwhile, the C13D’s advanced controls software technology intelligently and continuously optimises for power while minimising overall fluids consumption (fuel and after-treatment fluids), adhering to emissions standards.
What kind of product solutions do you provide to help customers achieve best-in-class fuel efficiency, and what are the specific features of your engines that contribute to optimising performance in this regard?
Many different and varying features within the entire industrial product line-up help optimise fuel efficiency and engine performance. In the case of the most recent C13D, the unique advanced control system is an algorithm-based software program that mimics the engine’s running and provides real-time optimisation and augmentation to the running parameters to minimise fuel consumption and maximise power while meeting emissions. Rather than being a hard-coded map-based program, the engine is constantly “learning” where it is performing, what the surroundings are, and optimising itself. Furthermore, the C13D’s critical internal components have been thoughtfully and carefully designed to reduce as much friction as possible, improving fuel efficiency.
What are the different kinds of engine solutions you have developed to help customers achieve their sustainability goals?
By developing products that are more efficient with fuel burning, we are taking an incremental step towards being more sustainable while providing value to our customers. Emissions should be thought of from a complete lifecycle point of view and not only from an “out of the tailpipe” perspective. As such, we offer machines and engines capable of operating on alternative fuels, such as biodiesel, biogas, hydrogen, HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and methanol. While emissions at the tailpipe are essentially the same as traditional fuels, lower-carbon intensity fuels may reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions in the fuel value chain.
Caterpillar continuously researches and hears from our customers about the need for alternate fuels. Caterpillar already has extensive experience with alternative fuel production engines, such as the G3520H, which can run on hydrogen and natural gas. We are currently investigating the adoption of those types of alternative fuels within our industrial and power generation engine range below 560 kW. We are working on projects to develop alternative fuel solutions within this power range, which looks at the coupling of hybrid electric-assist components that will compensate for the reduced power density these alternative fuels may have. Project THOR is another excellent example of improving lifecycle GHG emissions, putting our customers’ needs at the forefront of discussions.
Caterpillar is working across a wide range of technologies to support our customer’s varied requirements as they look to achieve their sustainability goals. Internal combustion engines will continue to play a significant role alongside other technologies such as electrification and fuel cells.
How does the C13D engine streamline operations for OEMs while maintaining versatility and reconfigurability?
The C13D’s broad power and torque range allow OEMs to simplify and communicate the power plant offerings within their machines. This would streamline inventory, logistics, training, installation, and service procedures as OEMs now only need to work with and understand one engine instead of 3 different engines. Meanwhile, the communication efforts of this engine have not sacrificed any versatility or reconfigurability that our OEMs have come to appreciate in our engines. The C13D will continue to provide the necessary variations in iron and accessories to enable the success of our OEMs.

Vibratory hammers, propelled by eccentric weights or hydraulic motors, revolutionise sheet pile driving in soft and granular soils. Offering rapid installation and eco-friendliness, they evolve with tilting mechanisms and boom adjust features for enhanced capabilities.
What is sheet piling? Sheet piles are sections of Steel or PVC with interlocking edges driven into the ground to provide earth retention and excavation support. Vibratory hammers are usually used to install sheet piles in soft soil, and Impact hammers can be used if the soil is too hard or dense.
Sheet piling is often adopted on building projects to provide temporary retention for basement construction, while on civil projects, it is commonly used for riverbank protection, seawalls, cofferdams, etc.
Sheet piles are of immense importance and significance in a project as they can be reused. This sets them apart from other retention/shoring techniques. Traditionally, steel sheet piles were used all across the globe until as recently as 10-12 years back, when PVC sheet piles were introduced in the industry. These can prove to be very cost-effective alternatives to Steel sheets, though only if the requirement is for permanent works.
Excavator-mounted vibratory hammers: Vibratory hammers are highly effective for sheet pile driving in soft and granular soils. Their unique feature is harnessing vibrational energy through eccentric weights or hydraulic motors, creating high-frequency vibrations that reduce friction during penetration. Their rapid installation in specific soil types further enhances their appeal for efficient and eco-friendly sheet pile driving, especially where minimising environmental impact is important.
These Hammers have evolved significantly over the years, and now there are variants available with tilting mechanisms to hold, lift, and drive sheet piles in a single operation. If you need to drive up to 8m, you can opt for a unit suitable for a 20T excavator.
Boom adjusts: By simply adding a gooseneck and making a boom adjust mechanism, you can increase the 20T excavators’ pile handling capability from 6-7m to 9-10m. This relatively small investment provides greater capabilities to your excavator.
Vibro boom & gooseneck: 30T and 40T excavators can be equipped with gooseneck extensions or a vibro boom attachment to drive sheet piles up to a depth of 14-16m. Excavator-mounted setups are cheaper in both investment and operating costs. They are more popular worldwide due to their ease and speed of operation.
Side grip hammers: In case of space constraints, there are options for mounted side grip vibro hammers. E.g., if you need to drive sheet piles under a bridge/flyover, you cannot use a crane or a large excavator. In such a scenario, a side grip mounted on a 20T or 30T excavator can drive even up to 14m sheet piles.
PVC sheet piles vs steel sheet piles
Why PVC sheet piles? These are the most durable synthetic pile products in the world. PVC is the material of choice where environmental factors are a concern, as they do not rot, decay, rust, or spill. PVC sheet piles are specifically designed to replace conventional sheet piles, primarily where the retention is permanent.
PVC is the most durable in corrosive environments, as wood rots, concrete spalls, and steel rusts. Independent testing and analysis show that properly designed and installed PVC walls can last 75+ years. PVC Sheet piles can be driven with vibratory hammers and do not require any other equipment.
PVC Sheet piles are available in colours that blend perfectly with marine applications. Using these can create a beautiful permanent retention wall, embankment, etc. Depending on the quantity, PVC sheet piles can also be manufactured in customised colours, elevating the aesthetics of any project.
Applications of sheet piles
Sheet piles serve many purposes in construction. They are commonly used for retaining walls, foundation support, and maritime infrastructure like wharf and quay walls. They also provide stability for bridge abutments, secure trenches during excavation, and create cofferdams for waterlogged areas. In urban projects, they facilitate underground parking structures and riverbank stabilisation. Additionally, sheet piles play a crucial role in pipeline installation projects. Their versatility makes them indispensable across diverse construction applications.
