An industry as ancient as civilization itself, mining is undergoing a high-tech revolution. Today’s mines are a far cry from the dusty, manual operations of the past, thanks to a surge in advanced equipment powered by smart technologies. With AI, automation, and data analytics reshaping the landscape, mining is evolving to be safer, more productive, and increasingly sustainable. These innovations aren’t just transforming how minerals are extracted; they’re setting a new standard for eco-friendly and efficient practices in an industry traditionally seen as hard on the environment.

India, in particular, is at the forefront of this technological shift. Fueled by ambitious infrastructure projects, government investment, and a commitment to sustainable growth, the country’s mining equipment sector has seen remarkable expansion. In 2024 alone, the industry grew by 25 percent, driven largely by demand for earthmoving and material-handling equipment. MHE and earthmoving equipment sales volumes are set to reach an impressive 128-130 thousand units by the end of the fiscal year, up from 107 thousand in 2023. As India continues to embrace cutting-edge mining solutions, its future in the global mining arena looks brighter—and greener—than ever.

Key policy shifts are expected to fuel the growth of mining operations further and, by extension, the demand for mining equipment. Alongside this, the focus on sustainable mining practices has accelerated the shift towards energy-efficient equipment and automation, which is part of a broader global trend to reduce carbon footprints.

However, challenges remain, notably cost competitiveness. Many government clients opt for more affordable equipment, putting pressure on manufacturers to balance cost and profitability. Equipment financing, procurement delays, and shortages in skilled labour are also hindering sector efficiency. Despite these challenges, opportunities are emerging in areas like adopting large, technologically advanced equipment and the growing popularity of leasing models, including “pay-as-you-use” arrangements, which help reduce upfront costs.

Embracing smart technology for better efficiency
As mining operations become more data-driven, technology solutions like digital tipping systems and hydraulic innovations are significantly impacting. Hyva India demonstrated various sophisticated solutions at the recently held IMME 2024, including their Digital Tipping Systems (DTS Guide), hydraulic cylinders, and kits. According to Jeffrey Zuidgeest, Regional Director, BU Components, Hyva India, “The DTS Guide, in particular, has garnered praise for its ability to boost operational efficiency by providing fleet managers with real-time tracking and data insights. This technology allows operators to remotely monitor load distribution, ground stability, and equipment health, reducing downtime and improving overall operations.”

Zuidgeest’s comments highlight the increasing need for technologies that help operators make faster, informed decisions. Hyva’s U-shaped tipper bodies also garnered attention for their lightweight design, which maximises payload capacity, reduces discharge times, and contributes to lower environmental impact — essential for cutting operational costs in a highly competitive market.

Sustainable mining practices
Sustainability has become a key focus in the mining sector, driven by regulatory pressures and industry demands. V G Sakthikumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Schwing Stetter, emphasised, “Sustainability is at the core of our operations, and we are always innovating to lessen our environmental impact. From energy-efficient systems to recyclable materials, our equipment features contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and extending product lifecycles.”

Schwing Stetter’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its manufacturing practices, which include energy-efficient systems and waste reduction programs. With the Indian mining equipment market expected to expand significantly, the company is positioning itself as a leader in environmentally conscious solutions for the mining and construction sectors.

Similarly, Prasad Dange, Business Head of Mineral and Aggregate Crushing Systems at TKIL, noted the growing role of sustainability in mining, stating, “Adopting sustainable practices is no longer optional—it is a necessity for the future. With a stable government and large-scale infrastructure projects, we are committed to providing innovative, eco-friendly solutions that enhance energy efficiency and operational effectiveness.”

Dange’s statement underscores the importance of developing hybrid solutions that balance energy use, operational effectiveness, and environmental responsibility. TKIL’s focus on AI-enabled predictive maintenance and hybrid crushing systems is a prime example of how mining companies integrate sustainability into their business models.

Safety and efficiency in challenging conditions
Mining operations, especially in extreme conditions, require equipment that can withstand the toughest challenges. For this reason, products that combine durability with innovation are increasingly in demand. Anto Sebastian, CEO of Jaws Tech, shared insights into the company’s advancements in dewatering technology: “We’ve developed self-relieving and anti-choking dewatering screens that achieve 90 percent efficiency in dewatering while improving production. By preventing choking, our screens help reduce downtime and enhance overall production yield.”

Sebastian’s focus on anti-clogging technology for conveyors is another example of the need for innovative solutions that help operators improve productivity while maintaining safety standards. The Kitto conveyor cleaning solutions, which reduce carryback by up to 95 percent, are just one example of how technology can improve operational efficiency in mining.

Similarly, Subhajit Sarkar, Deputy GM of Business Development at Maco Corporation, discussed the growing importance of safety in mining. He noted, “Our ANSUL fire suppression systems are designed to offer comprehensive fire protection for mining vehicles, ensuring compliance with global standards and minimising the risk of fire-related incidents. With a focus on reducing long-term operational costs, these systems offer high-value solutions with a shelf life extending up to 12 years.”

Safety technologies like fire suppression systems, fatigue monitoring, and AI-enabled dashcams are critical in ensuring the well-being of workers and the protection of costly equipment in the mining sector.

The role of advanced materials and equipment
New materials like polyurethane are gaining traction as the industry prioritises durability and efficiency. B. Rout, MD of Swagath Urethane Pvt Ltd, explained, “Polyurethane applications in mining have evolved significantly. Replacing metal screening media with polyurethane has extended product lifespans, reduced noise, and decreased replacement frequency. This shift not only boosts sustainability but also enhances the bottom line for operators.”

Swagath’s polyurethane solutions are helping operators reduce metal waste and improve equipment longevity, showcasing how material innovation shapes the future of mining operations.

The mining sector is at a crossroads, with the increasing adoption of digital solutions, sustainable practices, and cutting-edge equipment defining its future. As industry leaders like Shyam Gyanani of Trident International P Ltd emphasise, innovations like foam-filled tyres and solid tyres are making mining operations safer and more sustainable, reducing carbon footprints and enhancing the overall efficiency of mining equipment. By investing in innovative technologies, adopting green practices, and prioritising safety, the industry is positioning itself for a more efficient, sustainable, and profitable future.

As the industry continues to evolve, the companies that adopt new technologies and environmentally responsible practices will shape the mining landscape of tomorrow.
