Use of Walchem controllers in cooling towers
.

In a typical cooling tower, evaporation causes concentration of impurities, leading to scaling, corrosion and microbiological contamination. Chemicals are dosed to counter these effects.

Issues with manual chemical dosing
Manual chemical dosing is approximate and inexact as it is based on averages or offline readings, and so it is not optimised to the conditions of operation most of the time. Hence manual dosing results in unscheduled downtime, increased water usage, high operation and maintenance costs and inadequate or excessive use of acid/alkali dosing – all of which reduce the life of the cooling system.

Automation by Walchem controller
The Walchem cooling tower control system is capable of measuring system conductivity and temperature. The conductivity sensors are either a contacting style or an electrode-less style. An optional second sensor can be a choice of pH, ORP, fluorometer, or online corrosion monitor. Six digital inputs are available for sensors that include a flow switch, contacting water meter, paddlewheel flowmeter or other dry contact devices.

Outputs include upto six mechanical relays, and two optional 4-20 mA outputs. Digital communications are via Ethernet. The controller is accessible via the Internet for configuring, data logging, and control of relay outputs. The USB port provides the ability to upgrade the software in the controller to the latest version, save all the set points from a controller onto a USB flash disk, import settings into another W600 controller, and download datalog files to a USB flash disk.

There are very few solutions available in the market that have the capability to manage all of the above and also provide a consistent and accurate reading and output. Walchem’s solution is unique in its ability to provide a 2-way communication between a remote user and the controller.

Industries
The Walchem cooling tower control system has found use in several industries such as textile, power, infrastructure, and more. The system is successfully installed at Grasim Industries, Adani Power, Tata Communication, and The West Bengal Power Development Corporation, among others.
