Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions, a division of the Veolia Group and a world leader in water treatment, designs and supplies drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities and small, standardised plants and equipment to municipal and industrial clients worldwide. The French multinational has a sizeable presence in India and provides a range of services through its subsidiary to meet the nation’s water treatment and management system needs.
Could you elaborate on Veolia Water Technologies’ focus in the Indian market and the services you provide?
We are a $40 billion global company, and water technology and solutions are one of the pillars of Veolia and a major business unit for us. We have been in India for close to 20 years, have done several assignments, and have more than 500 references for completing the most complex projects, starting from treatment of drinking water, sewage treatment and industrial wastewater treatment. We also have a zero liquid discharge system and provide ultra-pure water to specialised industries where such a type of water is required. We also provide services to more than 38 locations where we operate and maintain the plants supplied by us. As a company, our focus and expertise are on ‘tough to treat’ water treatment. If the water quality in any industry is uncompromising, we offer our technology to solve the problem and help the customer.
What are the key challenges in managing water resources in India, particularly regarding groundwater depletion and contamination?
We have a severe shortage of water in this country. As a nation with 18 percent of the world’s population, we only have a 4 percent share of the water, which is the biggest problem. The only way we can utilise and survive in this scenario is to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Reduce relates to people’s awareness to ensure they don’t waste water. But reuse and recycle is where we come into the picture. If we look at India as a market, there are multiple problems to solve. One aspect is repurposing water sourced from municipalities using recycled water, reducing the industry’s reliance on freshwater.
The second focus today is industrial effluent. If we do not treat the water that comes out of the factories, it will join surface water, contributing to more pollution. These are some of the things we have to act on. Today, we are one of the largest users of groundwater, and we consume more water than anybody else. But this water comes with minerals and many other ingredients that we need to treat before its use.
What other technologies do Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions provide in India?
We have many technologies to offer, which differ depending on the industry and application. For industries that need treatment for very complex effluents, such as pharmaceuticals, chemical-related, and common treatment plants, solutions will differ based on feed characteristics. For example, we talk about Zero Liquid Discharge, where we have our own specifically designed Zero Liquid Discharge schemes/equipment like Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR), crystallisers, and different unique evaporator designs. Our ultrafiltration membranes with PVDF and PES chemistry are typically used in various industrial and municipal applications. We have supplied our Ultrafiltration technology to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and BWSSB in Bangalore at Jakkur. We proudly say we are the only company under the Make in India programme that has been manufacturing the Reverse Osmosis membrane for around 15 years at Hoskote in Bangalore. We are also manufacturers of speciality chemicals, typically used in various industrial segments, and we do chemical blending in Hoskote. Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions offers one-stop solutions to meet municipal and industrial customer needs.
