The new surface excavation emerges as a beacon of hope, representing a new era of eco-
friendly and responsible mining practices. With a focus on precision and automation, this cutting-edge surface excavation miner is revolutionising the landscape of mining operations.
The environmental impact of mining can affect communities and ecosystems in numerous ways, such as deforestation, soil erosion, dust, water and noise pollution. To mitigate these adverse effects on the environment, companies are adopting sustainable mining practices to make mines safer and more eco-friendly.
The Vermeer T1255III SSD (Single-Sided Direct Drive) Surface Excavation Miner utilises the method of continuous surface mining, whereby powerful cutting wheels break up rocky material and extract material one layer at a time. Vermeer’s top-down cutting technique also allows cutting teeth to penetrate hard rock with the weight of the attachment rather than relying on tracks. As such, this facilitates greater mining productivity, precision, reduced wear and tear on cutting teeth, and material size consistency.
Furthermore, the T1255III SSD SEM can cut up to 80-degree high walls, expanding the amount of material mined in a quarry. It produces less noise and vibration than traditional drill and blast mining and has the option of an onboard dust suppression system which helps reduce dust emissions. Dust is extracted from the enclosed cutting head via vacuums into the baghouse filtration system and then purged, maintaining air quality around the job site.
To counteract workforce issues and rising labour costs facing the mining industry, Vermeer is also working towards integrating more automated mining technologies into Surface Excavation Miners. For instance, the Vermeer surface miner can also be equipped with AutoSteer when coupled with GPS control. This GPS technology can be utilised when following a programmed GPS mine plan, allowing the machine to steer straight sections of the GPS mine plan automatically. This minimises operator steps and is the most efficient way to use a Vermeer surface miner.
Another feature is Vermeer Telematics, an online tool tracking machine productivity and job site management. Fleet or operations managers can access Telematics by using a smartphone, tablet or computer to view real-time information about the GPS location, productivity (including idle times and fuel consumption), and maintenance needs of their Vermeer equipment.
Telematics sends alerts when a machine is operating outside of its expected GPS location and notifications when planned maintenance or service needs to be performed.
The Vermeer T1255III SSD SEM also comes equipped with TEC® Plus computer-aided control system with SmartTEC performance software; the TEC Plus system and SmartTEC performance screens that use CAN bus technology to monitor machine performance data continuously — provide proactive machine maintenance and operator performance analysis to machine owner and fleet manager. In addition, the TEC® Plus Electronic Control system maximises the transit speed of the machine for increased productivity. Operators can also remotely operate the surface miner on an incline and high walls via remote control, thus ensuring greater accessibility, manoeuvrability, and safety.
