Excavators are now almost a century-old, as an equipment category. It has evolved over the years from a mechanical device to electrically-operated machines and then hydraulically-operated, much faster, production equipment. The evolution is ongoing with the induction of newer technologies to improve various operating parameters like fuel efficiency, faster or safer operations etc.

A controller for optimising the combination of power (engine or hydraulic) and efficiency was introduced many years back ushering in the era of “machine management” enabling use of only as much power as was necessary for the operator to carry out the given task.

Explaining what makes an excavator smart, S K Jaruhar, Advisor – Support Services, Kobelco Construction Equipment (India) Pvt Ltd, says, “More recent trend we see is machines having capabilities to carry out pre-defined tasks like digging to a given depth or slope and not beyond. These features enable operators to work more precisely with minimal wastage of fuel or effort.”

• New smart display monitor allows the operator to not only select the operating mode but also the hydraulic oil flow and pressure settings.
• A KPSS release switch enables the operator to continue working in the unlikely event of any problem with the controller.
• GEOSCAN – A remote-monitoring telematics device which allows for management of key parameters of the excavator.

Volvo CE: Riding on automation
Automation, not just for excavators but other types of machines as well, delivers more environmentally-friendly operations through improved productivity. Using intelligent machinery to manage duty-cycle work means energy usage is optimised. “Automation should make it easier to change machine applications quickly, giving greater flexibility in utilisation,” believes Dimitrov Krishnan, Vice President and Head of Volvo Construction Equipment India. For example, the Eco mode enables some of Volvo CE’s excavators to switch off the engines when idling – thus helping deliver fuel efficiency and cost savings for the customer.

“Our latest excavators are equipped with intelligent work modes, including the new G4 work mode,” claims Krishnan. He opines, “Operators can choose a mode that best suits the task at hand, selecting from idle, fine, general, heavy, and power max modes. Choosing the correct mode ensures productivity is optimised. Models such as our EC210D and EC250D possess this feature.” On the EC350D, there is an Eco mode, which automatically switches off the engine when the machine is idling. This helps further reduce fuel consumption.

Also, with CareTrack telematics system, Volvo CE’s customers can obtain a wide range of information on machine performance that can be used to help save time and money. Operation reports allow for the monitoring and minimisation of idle time so that fuel consumption can be optimised and non-productive machine hours and service costs reduced. The information can also help customers increase uptime by planning machine servicing and maintenance in advance, thereby avoiding potential problems. The CareTrack telematics system also allows the local Volvo dealer to troubleshoot faults remotely.
