ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has received the coveted GreenPro Ecolabel accreditation for its coated steel products, including Galvanised Iron (GI), Pre-Painted Galvanised Iron (PPGI), and Optigal® steel, which are manufactured at its Pune site.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has achieved the coveted GreenPro Ecolabel accreditation for its coated products, which include Galvanised Iron (GI), Pre Painted Galvanised Iron (PPGI), and Optigal® steel types manufactured at its Pune site. This designation, which labels AM/NS India’s high-quality offerings as Green Products, follows a rigorous review procedure by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and strengthens the company’s leadership in sustainable steel manufacturing.
The CII introduced the GreenPro Ecolabel, a globally accepted ‘Type I Ecolabel’, to promote sustainable consumption and production in the Indian industry. The Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) has recognised the certification, which uses a lifecycle-based, multi-criteria evaluation process and is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 for responsible consumption and production, an important component of global climate action.
Akshaya Gujral, Executive Director (Downstream Operations), ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS India), said, “This prestigious certification and recognition of our best-in-class products as Green Products reinforce the company’s leadership in lower-carbon steel manufacturing. The acknowledgement also serves as a clear testament to our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the principles of a circular economy.”
More than 21 percent of materials used in the production process are considered sustainable, and 99 percent are regionally sourced, greatly lowering transportation-related emissions. Furthermore, harmful compounds, including heavy metals, are prohibited, resulting in a safer and cleaner manufacturing process.
The Pune factory excels at resource-efficient production by incorporating energy and water efficiency and modern waste management procedures based on the 3R principles of reduction, reuse, and recycling. Together, these measures help reduce the carbon footprint per square metre of coated steel. The facility is also a zero-liquid discharge plant.
The CEPT Research & Development Foundation in Ahmedabad has confirmed the coated steel’s SRI performance, making the due diligence process easier for companies seeking high-performance and efficient materials.
CII’s GreenPro Ecolabel assesses products’ environmental impact throughout their lifecycle, from design and raw material sourcing to manufacturing methods and waste management. The accreditation encourages manufacturers to use sustainable practices, emphasising innovative design, resource efficiency, and low environmental effects.
