The main advantages of precast technology are quality, speed of construction, and a value-for-money product.
“Properly designed and specified precast concrete products go a long way toward reducing and eliminating many common utility construction problems, while the economics of precast translate into faster, more cost-effective projects,” says Sachin Patil, Founder and Proprietor, Shree Sai Enterprises shares his views on current trends and major innovations of precast concrete. He highlights some of the current trends as follows:
• Verifying construct quality: Precast products are manufactured under roof in climate-controlled environment; it’s easy to verify their quality without making repeated visits to the work site typical for other construction methods.
• Structural integrity: Precast products provide a long service life that far exceeds other materials like high-strength precast products. In fact, precast increases in strength over time, due to its load-carrying capacity. Precast is not susceptible to corrosion, warping or deflection and can handle exposure to all types of weather.
• Tighten timelines, reduce costs: Specifying precast products will compress construction schedules. Since precast products are manufactured under roof while the site is prepared, there is no waiting time for curing cement or delays for harsh weather. Products are delivered when needed for quick, one-pass installation and minimal site disruption. Compressed schedules, fewer on-site trades, and eliminating weather delays add up to reduced project costs.
Buying factors
Precast concrete elements are one of the most remarkable developments in the construction of concrete structures. Precast concrete elements have been widely used for architectural and structural buildings. Sachin says, “The use of elements has increased in recent years because these provide the advantages of construction effectiveness, high levels of quality control, saving construction time, minimisation of skilled labour, reduced manpower requirements on site and savings in formwork requirements.”
Major innovations
Focusing on the major innovations happening in the area of precast concrete, Sachin says, “Precast panels, previously used on a limited basis for rehabilitation projects, have become increasingly popular over the past decade. Precast pavement technology can ease congestion at busy intersections.”
Industry’s maturity
Speaking on Indian industry’s maturity to use advanced precast concrete optimally, Sachin Patil says, “Indian realty majors are adopting precast technology in building their latest projects. The main advantages of precast technology are quality, speed of construction, and a value-for-money product. To deal with labour shortage, time delays and in an aim to deliver quality products, developers and builders are now adopting precast technology. The use of such technology helps in saving up to 64 per cent of the time taken for similar projects using normal construction methods and technology.”
Why Shree Sai Enterprises?
When asked about the USP of Shree Sai Enterprises, Sachin Patil mentions the following points:
• Precast concrete is optimised: Advanced technologies used in the precasting plants create an improved quality product i.e. reduced tolerances, thinner sections, engineered solutions.
• Precast concrete is versatile: Factory production allows a wide choice of surface finishing, colour range and special shapes. Precast concrete has another advantage. The precast concrete industry can source a wide range of aggregates locally and offers a tremendous variety of colours and visual effects.
• Precast concrete is ecological: Made of natural raw materials (stones, gravels, sand, and cement), locally available almost everywhere and in an enormous quantity, precast concrete minimises the whole life cycle impact on the environment when compared with other construction materials.
“Precast concrete units can entirely be re-used or recycled, almost 100 per cent of a concrete building can be recycled, no matter how heavily reinforced. Factory made precast can be stored for delivery as required, as compared to that on site location few building sites have adequate space for storage of precast components. Factories are familiar with storage methods to minimise problems. QC systems specifically designed for the plant dedicated solely to quality precast production,” concludes Sachin Patil.
