JK Tyre & Industries, India’s largest tyre maker, has reiterated its commitment to sustainability by joining RE100 and using 100 percent renewable electricity by 2050.
JK Tyre is the first Indian tyre producer and the 16th Indian company to join RE100. To continue on track, the company has established a long-term objective (by FY’30) of reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity by 50 percent relative to the base fiscal year 2019. JK Tyre seeks to develop sustainable practices in the sector, opening the route to a carbon-neutral future by moving “Beyond Compliance” rather than simply planning for future climate requirements.
On joining the RE100 project, Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre, says, “Our decision to join RE100 represents our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility. Under the motto “today for tomorrow,” we at JK Tyre believe that a sustainable future requires significant action today. As an environmentally conscious brand, energy efficiency and conservation remain at the top of our priority list. We take pride in joining world leaders in promoting this shift towards renewable energy and look forward to inspiring constructive change in the industry.”
Dr. Divya Sharma, India Executive Director, Climate Group said: “JK Tyre’s decision to procure 100 percent renewable electricity for their operations by 2050 is a milestone commitment. It shows that renewable electricity can indeed be considered for large scale, intensive manufacturing needs. We welcome them into the RE100 network and look forward to working with them – and to their progress.”
JK Tyre has been able to maintain strong sustainability outcomes year after year. The corporation has established a key goal of incrementally increasing the use of renewable energy by 2-5 percent per year and has constantly sought the installation or procurement of green energy sources across its industrial plants. Currently, renewable sources account for 40 percent of the company’s energy consumption.
The company has also reduced its GHG Emission Intensity by 64 percent since the base year 2013-14. JK Tyre has set a global standard for raw water utilisation at all of its manufacturing plants in India, making them zero liquid discharge, zero-waste-to-landfill, and free of single-use plastic.
RE100 is a global movement that brings together the world’s most significant companies dedicated to 100 percent renewable energy. Climate Group leads the project, which includes over 400 of the world’s largest and most powerful corporations from a wide range of industries. RE100 was developed in collaboration with CDP.
