Kolkata in India has successfully launched its first-ever underwater metro service, connecting the Howrah and Salt Lake neighbourhoods. The service is part of the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation’s East-West Metro Project, which seeks to provide a faster and more efficient mode of transportation for the city’s residents.
This underwater metro service is the first in India and has been developed in collaboration with international experts from countries such as Germany and Austria. The train has been designed to travel 30 meters below the surface of the Hooghly River, which flows through the city.
The project faced several delays due to technical difficulties, but after years of hard work and dedication, the underwater metro has finally become a reality. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the service on Thursday, April 14, 2023.
This metro is a part of the East-West Metro Corridor in Kolkata, and the metro train is expected to cover the 520-meter stretch under the Hooghly River in just 45 seconds. This tunnel under the river is 32 meters below the water level. This development is expected to reduce travel time between Howrah and Salt Lake from 90 minutes to just 16 minutes, significantly improving connectivity and easing city road congestion. The service will also boost the local economy, making it easier for commuters to access key business areas and tourist attractions.
The underwater metro has state-of-the-art features, including a modern signalling system, automatic fare collection, and advanced fire protection measures. It also boasts air-conditioned coaches, providing passengers with a comfortable and convenient travel experience.
The underwater metro is expected to carry around one million passengers daily and will operate from 6 am to 10 pm. It will be integrated with the existing Kolkata Metro system and other modes of public transport, making it easier for commuters to switch between different modes of transport.
The underwater metro is a significant achievement for Kolkata and India, demonstrating the country’s technological prowess and commitment to modernizing its infrastructure. The project is expected to set an example for other cities in India and worldwide, inspiring them to invest in modern and efficient transportation systems.
