Procurement trends of scaffolding
The buying decision for scaffolding is mainly driven from its utility and convenience to use. Customers are now looking for solutions which are mobile, faster to assemble and dismantle, durable and maintenance free. There is a shift in buying pattern. According to Gopal Modi, Executive Director, Mtandt Limited, “Customers are preferring aluminium scaffolding for internal use over the traditional steel scaffolding due to its inherent advantage of being low- weight while maintaining a high capacity to bear load. Less weight means fewer labour required for handling, saving in transportation cost and convenient installation.”
Decisive factors
Scaffolding is an integral part for many industries today and its demand is growing exponentially. However, selecting an appropriate scaffolding system for a job site is always challenging. Explaining on the major factors a buyer should consider before making decision of buying scaffolding, Modi said, “Customer should consider the multi-utility of scaffold, its application area, convenience to use, less manpower required, assembly and dismantle time taken should be less. It should not hamper the traffic flow within the premises.” He also suggests, “Buyer should go for scaffolding which puts minimum load on ground and easy to manoeuvre.”
Procurement drivers
According to Modi, “Procurement decisions are driven by multi-level application, recurring cost in terms of manpower required every time and maintenance.” Buyers also factors the scaffolding setup time which should be minimal and more time should available to work at height during maintenance period which is often very limited.
“Safety is also a paramount influencing factor which favours the purchase of scaffolding confirming to stringent EN 1004 norms and are CE certified,” he added.
Scaffolding: rent or buy?
Utilisation and frequency of use is the major factor to determine whether to rent or buy scaffold, observed Modi. He said, “Customers who frequently need scaffolding should buy it where as customers who needs scaffolding in bulk or less frequent use can go for rental options.”
