Scaffolding & Formwork: 5 success stories
.

Discussing the most significant stories in the field of scaffolding and formwork

With rapid growth of urbanisation, high-rise structures and infrastructure development will be seen everywhere across India. Modern construction demands technologies, which are faster, safe and innovative. Scaffolding & formwork plays a vital role in construction of any project. Scaffolding which is also known as scaffold or staging is a kind of temporary structure used to support labours and materials to aid in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, bridges, etc. It is basically used on site to get access to heights. Whereas, formwork is a type of temporary or permanent moulds into which concrete or same kind of materials are poured.

BSL associates with Godrej Properties
BSL associated with Godrej Properties Ltd (GPL)for the execution of their prestigious Godrej Infinity project at Pune in mid-2016. Hari Om, Director, BSL Scaffolding Ltd, says, “We have designed and supplied 15,000 sq. m. of formwork area for the luxury housing prime project. The project was planned by GPL for
43 acres of residential development of land bank located on the river bank of Mula-Mutha river at Pune. The project has premium homes with 1, 2 and 3 BHK type flats with balconies and many amenities. In the first phase of construction six high-rise towers were planned to be constructed using aluminum formwork, apartments were ranging from 400 sq.ft. to 1100 sq.ft.”

The company followed the following methodology to execute this project:
• Conceptual meetings with project team to address specific customer needs.
• Study of all possible available technical drawings through serious of meetings with GPLs project, structural, architectural, MEP teams and their respective consultants etc.
• Freezing shell plans with clients decision makers to define the scope on client’s drawings.
• In-house design of internal flat wise or apartment wise panels and other connecting material members.
• Manufacturing and quality testing at the unit.
• Clients witness of a dry mock up of the system at company’s manufacturing base to check up design, confirmation to quality parameters etc.
• BSLs onsite support team consisting of supervisors and formwork experts at clients disposal at the project site to monitor erection, best practices, improvisation and time management. The BSL site support team worked in coordination with client, the design team and factory to ensure continuous improvement and to minimise deviation from all required parameters.

Layher’s scaffolding and temporary platform for Mahamasthakabhisheka Installation of scaffolding and temporary platform for Mahamasthakabhisheka also known as Mahabhisheka in the year 2018 at Shravanabelagola, Hassan District. Mahamastakabhisheka, the head anointing ceremony is performed once in 12 years to the 57 feet tall monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali at Shravanabelagola.

Mithilesh Kumar, Director, Layher Scaffolding Systems Pvt Ltd explains, “The main structures are used by devotees or pilgrims for Mahabhisheka. This structure is connected by two no’s of stair tower with 16 legs. Landing of both the stair tower is 1.57m. One for entrance and another one for exit devotees or pilgrims for Mahabhisheka. Both should be well connected with shoulder and head level. This is approximately 800 sq.m. area in two levels. One at shoulder level (approximately 400 sq.m) and head level (approximately 400 sq.m). The shoulder levels have connected with two cantilever (2.07m x 0.73m) left and right side of statue to make Mahabhisheka at both the shoulders.”

He adds, “The head levels have cantilever just above the head levels to Mahabhisheka from head levels. Maximum numbers of devotees or pilgrims have made Mahabhisheka from head level. The existing floor area
19m x 17m available at with double story building and stone is used for beam and slab of the building. The slab thickness is approx. 400 mm and cross section of beam 600×600 mm. Total plan area for each floor is 400 sq.m., total height of structure approx. 21.2 m from ground level. Mahamasthakabhisheka was the biggest achievement of the year 2017-18, the biggest challenge of this project was to lift materials from foot of hill to top of the hill.”

Nova Formworks at EXCON exhibition
Vikas Mittal, Director, Wonder Moldplast Pvt Ltd, says, “The road to success is always under construction and Nova provides plastic formwork which helps one build quality at an affordable price.”

He adds, “The most significant part of success we came across was when people came to us and confirmed that our product can be used more than 300 times during EXCON exhibition in Bengaluru by some customers from Chennai.”

Mittal further explains, “We recently got another testimony when one set of Nova formwork was used in more than three sites by Ahluwalia contract (India) Ltd where atleast 65 to 70 repetitions per site was an average totaling up around 200 repetitions. Even after that, 65 to 70 per cent of that material was being sent to another site again. The material had already been used for around 2.5 to 3 years and was still in useable condition, Vikramjit Ahluwalia was over whelmed with the repetitions of the formwork and he himself looked into the reusability of the formwork and on getting to know that the repetitions were easily achieved at these sites, he was very happy and applauded us and asked us to keep innovating the way we do and keep moving ahead. When Nova Formwork is applauded as value for money, it feels great that being an Indian company, and being Indians ourselves, we have always been brought up with the value of buying stuff which is good in quality and which helps us save money than other available products without compromising on quality, and here we are, satisfying the essential requisites of a buy which is affordable price, amazing quality and latest technology. This is a biggest achievement for us that our customers are happy, they feel their decision was right of buying our product, they finish their project before time, and they can make quality constructions and get unmatched service.”

Mtandt ‘s scaffolding used in PEB building construction
Mtandt has always been in the domain of aluminium scaffolding for light to medium duty applications. Recently, there was a need for use of scaffolding for certain specific activity during a PEB building construction. Additionally, it was also required that the scaffolding be mobile to facilitate movement within the building surroundings. There were many safety norms to be adhered to such as stairway to reach from one level to the next higher one, handrails during ascent, handrails during work on the platform, toeboards and so on. For stability and safety, the height-to-base ratio was to be maintained 1:3 or higher.

Gopal Modi, Executive Director, Mtandt Group, says, “We at Mtandt were able to qualify for all the parameters of design and safety, we became the sole approved make. The scaffolding was able to withstand high windspeeds as well, though we had to restrict the maximum freestanding height of 8m.”

He adds, “At the same site, there were other contractors working and after the success of our scaffolding at one location, at the same site, there were other requirements with similar applications. All of them switched over from their MS scaffolding and other uncertified scaffolding to Mtandt scaffolding.”

Raj Lakhani, Managing Director – PERI (India) Pvt Ltd, says, “PERI UP MI has unique gravity lock technology. Ledger of this system has a connection in the form of a wedge, which is hooked into the rosette opening. Thereby, the gravity lock drops into the rosette opening due to its own weight and locks self-actuating. This feature makes simple and safe assembly of the system and offer huge savings in time and cost.”

PERI DUO: a success story in universal application formwork system
PERI DUO, a universal application formwork system (single system for walls, foundations, columns and slabs) was launched in India. The product has been a big hit since then as it is seen as a potential replacement for the conventional formwork. PERI DUO was also awarded as the ‘Best Innovation Machine Award’ during bC India 2016. It is ergonomic in all aspects. Time, labour cost saving along with high flexibility is the major advantage the end users have. The system ensures high productivity and reduces the requirement of skilled labour on site. Being a lightweight formwork system, it is crane independent and has intuitive application. DUO formwork is manufactured from robust techno polymer and offers virtually tool free assembly. Techno polymers are shrink-free, develop no moisture expansion and do not rust. All these features makes DUO formwork system so beneficial compared to conventional formwork, which not only enhances the life of the product but also ensures maximum repetitions.

The project was planned by GPL for 43 acres of residential development of land bank in Pune.
