Sustainability in construction equipment begins with EV

The future of construction equipment in India is electric. With positive feedback from early adopters of electric machinery, industry leaders are optimistic about a swift transition towards electric equipment, paving the way for a sustainable and efficient construction landscape.
Could you elaborate on the battery-operated machines and how they differ from others in terms of usability?
Battery-operated machines are engineless, hence no diesel. Once charged, these can operate for 5 – 8 hours, depending on the model. However, the 922FE electric excavators are electric machines operated via a cable. You simply plug them in, and they are ready to use; no charging time is required. This means the machine can be used 24 hours a day if the operator is available without any interruptions. It is incredibly efficient and reliable.
How do the performance metrics of your electric wheel loaders compare to their diesel counterparts in terms of productivity and efficiency?
Electric machines are far more productive than IC engine machines. Energy loss is significantly lower in electric vehicles (EVs). EVs are the future, especially for India, where our Prime Minister has emphasised the importance of solar energy and reducing diesel imports. India spends a lot of money importing diesel, so transitioning to electric machinery as quickly as possible is crucial for the country’s economy and sustainability.
How do you envision electric equipment’s role in the construction industry’s future, particularly in India?
Although there are some limitations right now, electric vehicles (EVs) are the future. In countries like China, the shift towards EVs is happening rapidly. We introduced EV machines just last year, and the response from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive. I foresee a significant transformation in India’s construction industry over the next two years, with widespread adoption of electric machines.
Given the global commitment to reducing carbon emissions, what specific strategies does LiuGong India implement to support sustainability in construction projects?
The best solution right now for reducing carbon footprints in the construction equipment industry is EV technology. Hydrogen might become a solution in the future, and we’re already prepared for that, but the infrastructure for hydrogen is currently not viable. For now, EVs are the most practical solution. For example, using five electric wheel loaders instead of diesel ones can save around 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. So, the focus on EV loaders is essential for sustainability.
Can you explain how telematics is utilised in LiuGong machines and how it aids fleet management and operational efficiency?
Telematics is essential in modern machinery. Almost all our machines are equipped with telematics systems. This technology makes it easier for both maintenance teams and customers. It allows them to monitor real-time data of their machines, including at least 16 different parameters. With this data, they can track the machine’s performance, schedule maintenance, and ensure that everything runs smoothly without downtime.
What role do you see LiuGong playing in the future of smart construction, and how are you preparing to meet the challenges and opportunities this presents?
We are aligned with the vision of our Prime Minister, who advocates for a developed India, or Viksit Bharat. We have a comprehensive range of products for construction, from road development to mining. Our offerings include mini-excavators, loaders, and other advanced equipment essential for building India’s future. We are committed to contributing to the Bharat Nirman initiative and supporting the government’s infrastructure goals.
The industry is booming now, and we are happy with the progress. We just hope the current government continues its policies for the next five years. We have received many projects from the government, and the future looks promising.
