Volvo CE launches next-gen high reach excavators for demolition
.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is introducing new generation High Reach excavators to bring customers into the future while also raising the bar on strength, productivity, and operator comfort throughout demolition applications.

The new EC400 High Reach and EC500 High Reach excavators replace the previous generation EC380EHR and EC480EHR models, respectively, with a revolutionary design and cutting-edge improvements to outperform the competition.

Martijn Donkersloot, Product Manager for Demolition Equipment at Volvo CE, says “We are committed to producing the ultimate in heavy-duty demolition machinery. These new models have been designed to efficiently respond to customer needs, which we found out after talking to many customers and operators all over the world – and because we make our own machines from start to finish, every detail has been carefully considered and improved to ensure the best possible performance.”

These machines benefit from the current generation update, which improves fuel efficiency by 15 percent through engine pump optimisation, greater ground-level access and longer service intervals, more precise controls, and a quieter working environment. The Smart View, which includes optional Obstacle Detection, also makes the working environment safer for operators and other on-site workers.

Tailored to perfection
In addition to the current advantages afforded by the new generation design, these improved models have various novel engineering improvements, particularly to High Reach excavators. These include a longer operating range due to the extension boom concept, which allows for more diversity in how the equipment is used, as well as the machines’ construction and hydraulic system, which have been optimised to carry big attachments.

The hydraulic lines have also been optimised for demolition by increasing the size of the X1 return line, which reduces the attachment’s back pressure, and installing a dedicated drain line for the attachment to reduce oil leak rates from the rotating motor attachment.

The custom Demolition Assist tool delivers visible and auditory alerts on working range and stability data for demolition configurations, while an HD integrated front view camera display assures maximum productivity and operator comfort. With Demolition Assist, Volvo CE has future-proofed the machine for potential new functionalities that our decommissioning customers may require in the future.

Furthermore, the purpose-built cab provides excellent visibility, making it ideal for high-reach demolition operations, while the scratch-resistant, one-piece, P5A classed front window and reinforced roof window are both readily cleaned, thanks to an optimised wiper system for each.

The machine’s ergonomics have also been improved thanks to additional functionality in the control levers, such as the optional Comfort Drive Control, cab tilting feature, and several smart switches.

Continuing to set a high bar
In addition to these enhancements, consumers can enjoy the same significant benefits as prior models. Volvo high-reach excavators are designed to provide optimal safety in all demolition situations. A strong structure and cab provide maximum protection against falling debris, while a high visibility cab and strategically positioned cameras assure outstanding stability and safety.

Their solid frame, excellent stability even with large tool weight, and exceptional hydraulics provide strong performance in even the most difficult demolition operations. The electro-hydraulic system employs clever technology to provide precise control, great productivity, and outstanding fuel efficiency, while a hands-on tilt feature and ergonomically positioned controls make it even easier to complete a profitable day’s work.

The machines’ compatibility with a wide range of Volvo and external supplier attachments further ensures their versatility. A sophisticated attachment management system saves settings for up to 20 different hydraulic attachments. Furthermore, the excavator can easily switch from an ultra-high-reach boom to a conventional digging configuration, allowing it to stay busy even when not performing high-reach jobs.

The EC400 High Reach and EC500 High Reach crawler excavators, designed specifically for Volvo’s industry-leading production facilities, are backed by the company’s global service and spare parts network. Customers across Europe and North America will be able to place orders beginning in April 2025.
