Construction Chemicals & Speciality Coatings from Clean Coats
Construction chemicals, which were almost non-existent in the Indian construction industry till 1980s, are gaining increasing importance. The adaptability to the new technology has ultimately resulted in quicker growth of the construction chemicals sector.
‘Construction Chemicals’ is a generic term used for assorted chemicals that are used in pre as well as post-construction stages as an additive. In order to give the concrete structures special properties during both pre and post-construction stages, various chemistries and formulations are used for different applications. Adhesive, and Substrate support, Grouts, Water Proofing Compounds etc. are some of the examples of this kind.
Construction chemicals, which were almost non-existent in the Indian construction industry till 1980s, are gaining increasing importance. The adaptability to the new technology has ultimately resulted in quicker growth of the construction chemicals sector. The market for construction generally divided into buildings and infrastructure projects such as roads, dams and bridges. As far as the construction of buildings is concerned, there can be totally a new construction or renovation and rehabilitation of old buildings as well. In the same way, for the infrastructure projects also there can be repair and renovation of existing structures apart from making new ones. Rising awareness, changing lifestyles and, most importantly, the increasing spending power of end users will be the key drivers in the sustained expansion of the Indian construction chemicals market.
Waterproof or water-resistant describes objects relatively unaffected by water or resisting water passage, or which are covered with a material that resists or does not allow water passage. Even today, in India, there is lack of awareness amongst people regarding the importance of waterproofing. The level of consciousness on the benefits of waterproofing is not very widespread. There are different techniques to waterproof buildings and we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages for most of them.
Brick bat coba: The first love of the Indian construction industry is the use of brick bat coba for roofs. There is a myth that brick bat coba offers waterproofing and some insulation against heat. Nobody can rightly call it a waterproofing material because it is porous and allows the entry of water into it very easily. Neither is it, by any stretch of the imagination, a thermal insulation product. In fact the heat absorbed by brick bat coba it is the same as that absorbed by concrete. Some other disadvantages of brick bat coba are that it
• Imposes unnecessary load on the system,
• Brings in cracks due to temperature variations and movements due to thermal stresses,
• Causes noise and the inconvenience of disposal of debris and possible damage to the mother slab, upon removal.
· Bitumen: The next commonly uses for waterproofing are bitumen and asphalt. The disadvantages of these and other thick toppings:
• Blister formation due to out gassing of the slab or the presence of moisture
• Poor resistance to chemical attack
• De-bonding of Membrane where vapour pressures exceed bond strength. This is a particular problem with sheet applied adhesive membranes where vapour gets trapped
• On exterior applications black surface increases temperature of slab, increasing slab thermal movement and cracking
• Generally unstable on steep sloped application.
Chemical Waterproofing (polymer based flexible membrane): In construction, a building or structure needs waterproofing since concrete itself will not be watertight on its own. New technology in waterproof membranes relies on polymer based materials that are extremely adhesive to create a seamless barrier around the outside of a structure. This relies on the application of one or more layers of membrane that act as a barrier between the water and the building structure, preventing the passage of water. However, the membrane system relies on exacting application.
Crystallization Waterproofing: This technology can be used in new construction and also for repair of old structure. Here the active chemicals with water penetrate into the structure and produces a catalytic action where the by-products of the structure come together to form non-soluble crystals within the capillary pores of the structure and effective blocks water transmission.
