Ushering to a safe era of mobility with Tata Motors’ range of trucks
.

Tata Motors’ new PRIMA truck line aims to provide increased safety not only to drivers, who frequently work long hours and must travel great distances but also to the cargo and people outside the vehicles.

With a total length of over five million kilometres, Indian roads comprise one of the largest transportation networks in the world, carrying 90 percent of the country’s passenger traffic and 60 percent of its goods. The movement of goods between hubs is performed by heavy-duty trucks, enabling logistics and construction, forming the backbone of this industry. Making these millions of miles of material movement safe and smooth for both people and the goods is very vital, and industry pioneers like Tata Motors are taking the lead in making this happen.

The 2020 report of the Ministry of Roads, Transportation, and Highways points to the grave threats posed by accidents. In 2020 alone, India recorded over 360,000 road accidents, claiming nearly 130,000 lives. The journey towards expanding on-road safety is guided by the Indian government’s “4-Es” strategy, namely education, engineering (of both roads and vehicles), enforcement, and emergency care. Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has consistently strived to engineer safer trucking through advanced mobility solutions, taking a cue from these precepts and its extensive industry experience.

Safety, tailor-made for Indian conditions
The Tata Prima and Signa ranges of trucks all come with crash-tested cabins and first-in-the-country, sophisticated safety systems. The new Prima range of trucks is equipped with India’s first Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), designed to provide world-class safety and comfort to drivers. The intent is not only to extend advanced safety to drivers, who often have long working hours and need to cover long distances but also for the goods and the people outside the trucks.

The heavy-duty sector of the CV industry often involves the transportation of sensitive, or high-value goods that, in the event of an accident, can cause considerable losses while claiming lives or, in some cases, harming the environment. Each of the features embedded in Tata Motors’ trucks actively works to prevent such mishaps through integrated and advanced safety features. Active and passive safety features are built-in for enhancing safe driving and reducing the number of accidents and their effects by leveraging the advent of technologies.

State-of-the-art technologies for safer roads
Tata Prima’s ADAS comes equipped with several advanced features. The Collision Monitoring System (CMS) is a device that apprises the driver of a potential collision in two ways: first, by alerting the driver of the risk through visual and audio warnings of obstacles, and second, by implementing collision avoidance when necessary. This means the ADAS can initiate or override the driver’s actions seconds before a potential collision.

The Driver Monitoring System (DMS) alerts the driver in case it detects the driver’s drowsiness or distraction, thus enhancing focus and productivity while primarily preventing accidents.

The Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) helps drivers stay in the right lane by detecting when the vehicle goes off-course, while the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) plays a very important role in stabilising the truck, helping to prevent a serious loss of control by detecting and preventing loss of traction in trucks. The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) helps provide real-time alerts to the driver on the tyre pressure of all wheels, improving tyre life, minimising irregular wear and tear, and thus enhancing safety and mileage.

The Tata Construck range of vehicles on the Signa and Prima platforms offers a wide array of technologies and safety features suited both for mining and construction applications, as well as for surface logistics. Its engine brake supports driver and vehicle safety with efficient braking. It reduces the chances of fatal accidents, affording better braking in downhill operations. The Hill Start Assist (HSA) feature works complementarily, increasing control while driving on slopes and thus preventing accidents. The latest Signa models come with sleeper cabins, suited for driving long distances, and day cabins for shorter-distance travel.

The safety mechanisms integrated into all of Tata Motors’ vehicles ultimately aim to ensure the safety of the drivers, the vehicles, the cargo, and the people around them. Additionally, these mechanisms also help fleet owners leverage their revenue and profitability by minimising unforeseen losses. At the heart of the pursuit of building some of the country’s safest CVs, is Tata Motors’ commitment to standing behind the needs of its customers, connecting their aspirations—with the promise of safety.
