Welspun Enterprises strengthens urban water infrastructure foothold acquires MEPL and advances innovative solutions for growth.

Welspun Enterprises Limited (WEL), the infrastructure development arm of Welspun World, has successfully acquired a 50.10percent stake in Michigan Engineers Private Limited, an EPC company specialising in trenchless technology-based solutions for urban water infrastructure. This acquisition was made by investing ₹137.07 crore in equity and has led to MEPL becoming a subsidiary of WEL.

This strategic move aligns with WEL’s expansion strategy for the water infrastructure sector, marking its foray into the high-margin and high-growth water and tunnelling solutions segment. Consequently, this bolsters the overall diversity of WEL’s business portfolio. By capitalizing on MEPL’s advanced infrastructure development techniques, WEL is entering the urban infrastructure domain, offering water and tunnelling solutions that complement its existing water and road enterprises.

MEPL’s expertise equips WEL to venture into niche and promising domains such as micro tunnelling, segment tunnelling, and sewer network rehabilitation, all underpinned by trenchless technologies across India. This broadens WEL’s project portfolio and enhances its service offerings.

Already well-established in India’s water and wastewater sector, WEL has amassed a substantial order book exceeding ₹ 6,000 crore. Among its ongoing projects are the notable Rural Water Supply Project, covering 2,500 villages under the Government of India’s Jal Jeevan Mission in Uttar Pradesh, and the innovative 418 MLD Waste Water Treatment Facility project in Dharavi, Mumbai. The latter stands as India’s inaugural multi-tier wastewater treatment facility, integrating cutting-edge technology and an eco-friendly footprint.

Employing digitalization and automation to elevate its processes, WEL has implemented advanced technologies like 5D Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the Dharavi Project, enhancing project oversight and cost management.

Commenting on the development of the acquisition, Sandeep Garg, Managing Director, Welspun Enterprises Limited, said, “MEPL is strong, strategic fit for accelerating the growth of our water  business and we are certain that the combined strengths of the two companies will drive significant  value for both our shareholders and customers. Our proven project management expertise, national  presence, strong industry foothold and robust financial health, coupled with MEPL’s technical  knowhow, operational and execution capabilities and experienced manpower will deliver a sustained  competitive advantage in the water and tunnelling solutions segment. Supported by favourable  sectoral tailwinds, the transaction will enable us to further scale up operations and create a unique  edge in the industry.”

Expressing his views on the acquisition, Saurin Patel, Managing Director, Michigan Engineers Private Limited, said, “We are delighted to be a part of Welspun World, known globally for its operational excellence and customer service. Our strategic partnership with Welspun Enterprises is a unique convergence of a financially strong infrastructure developer and a niche EPC player in the water and tunnelling space. We see tremendous synergies between us and are eager to deploy their project management skills and best practices, which will transform our business and further drive growth and  profitability.”

Positive industry trends due to government focus on programs like Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, National Mission for Clean Ganga, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Community Drinking Water Schemes instill confidence and are expected to drive growth in the water and wastewater market.
