Onduline:
A world leader in lightweight roofing
Onduline is an extremely tough, lightweight, corrugated roofing and wall cladding material manufactured from bitumen saturated recycled organic fibres under extreme heat and pressure. Onduline sheets were developed in France over 50 years ago and are widely used today across the world from the tropics to the Arctics.
Onduline is used in a wide range including residential, commercial, light industrial and agricultural applications. The Onduline group is the worlds’ largest manufacturer of lightweight roofing systems from recycled materials. The group contributes significantly to environment by recycling almost 200,000MT of salvaged cellulose fibres.
The group produces two main ranges of products — corrugated sheets under the Onduline brand name and corrugated tiles under the Onduvilla brand name. Onduline sheets are extremely safe to use and contain no substance that is harmful to health or to environment.
Onduline is manufactured by a patented process which ensures even penetration of bitumen asphalt. This ensures that the sheet has a high dimensional stability and prevents delamination. The colouring of the sheet is achieved through a unique pigmentation process which ensures that the colour is stained into the sheet. Unlike painted sheets, Onduline sheets retain their colour over a long period without fading and surface peeling.
Onduline sheets offer the following benefits:
• Excellent waterproofing characteristics.
• High insulation and sound absorbency values.
• Resistant to corrosion — does not rust, rot or become brittle.
• No algae or moss formation.
• Lightweight — 6.4kg per sheet of 1.9m2 area.
• Can withstand wind speeds up to 192km/hr.
• Does not break during transportation and installation.
• Available in a range of environmentally sensitive colours.
• Excellent colour retention.
• Requires minimum maintenance.
• Contains no asbestos.
• Easy to cut, shape and install.
Onduline sheets greatly reduce temperature beneath the roof when compared to metal sheets, since the thermal conductivity of this composite material is significantly lower than metal. The sound absorption capabilities of the sheets are also excellent. Onduline sheets are available in standard sizes of 2m*0.95m and are supplied in a standard thickness of 3mm. The standard colours are red/green/brown and black.
Onduvilla corrugated tiles are small elements of 1060*40cm size and designed to give roofs a pleasant look that reminds of traditional clay tiles, at the same time being extremely light. An exclusive 3-tone painting system ensures a natural texture on tiles. These tiles are made of a single layer of organic fibres and bitumen combined with resin. Onduvilla tiles are supplied in a range of exciting colours, ranging from single colours to shaded colours that significantly complement the appearance of roofs.
Main applications
Onduline sheets can be used in normal roofing systems. It is also used extensively as an over sheeting system over existing deteriorated roof coverings. This is a very economic, practical and safe solution for roof renovation. The main advantage of such a system is that there is minimum disruption to the building and also thermal and vapor control characteristics are improved.
Onduline can be fixed on to wooden or metallic frames as well as on concrete roofs. It also provides flexibility to be installed on curved roofs In addition to the products mentioned above, Onduline also manufactures a range of allied products like bitumen waterproofing membranes, damp proofing membranes, polycarbonate sheets, sound reduction membranes and bitumen-based tapes for repair applications.
Onduline recently set up a subsidiary in India, and details are as follows.
