There is no need for alternative fuel engine anywhere in the world currently. However, Volvo Penta India is leveraging on its technologies to deliver the right productto the market when the demand arises for the same, says Miron Thoms, Vice President and Head of Volvo Penta India, in an interaction with Shashi Kumar Sharma of B2B Purchase.

How will your engine said the Indian market in shifting away from fossil fuel in future?
Our engines are part of the Volvo Group Engineplatform strategy. When it comes to alternative fuels, we are leveraging on the technologies developed in the group. We have internal companies that develop the core of the engine and then, each individual company – trucks, bus, construction equipment and Penta. There are different companies that do the final development according to their needs and purposes.

We have upgraded technology according to the local government and the kind of alternative fuel to be implemented to substitute fossil fuel. There are nine different technologies available that can be utilised when the market is ready. While currently we don’t see any need for alternative fuel engines anywhere in the world, we will deliver the right product to the market when the demand arises for the same. One of the alternatives fuels on the global scale is more than a LNG and CNG market specifically on the truck and engine side, and in North America we have some products running on natural gas. Whenever we implement one of our engines, the fuel cut is high in that range thereby helping meet government’s target to cut 20 per cent of the fuel by 2025. Reduction of import fuel is the alternative goal, andelectron mobility, alternative fuels, or fuel reduction on current products will all lead to the reduction in fuel import.

How are your engines better fuel efficient as compared to others in CE and mining equipment?
We are focused on getting in combination with different emission legislation given their impact on fuel consumption. We are trying to get S (10:22) fuel efficient engine when it comes to combustion that will also affect exhaust gases. The less fuel you’ll burn, the lesser emission you have. While this is only one part of the target, fuel efficiency comes from the complete product, our internal products. The R&D department takes control of the whole drive line. When it comes to external customers for example, you have forklift manufacturers in India, stone crusher manufacturer in India. We only have a part of the design. So, actually we are supporting to get this drive line as fuel efficient as possible.

What engine innovations are you ready with for the CE and mining space?
For mining in India, we have a range from 5 metre to 60 metre and all of 8 metre, 11 metre, 30 metre and 60 metre operating mines in India. These engines have been developed for tougher conditions that you have in mines. We support our customers that are building these kind of machinery knowing that we are from the mining sector and successful on the mining side with our engines.

Electro mobility, alternative fuels, or fuel reduction on current products will cut fuel import.
