MMD’s mining solutions are considered as energy efficient. Could you brief us on their cost efficiency?

The basic concept of the MMD Sizer is the use of two rotors with large teeth, on small diameter shafts, driven at a low speed by a direct high torque drive system. The design produces three major principles which all interact when breaking materials using the Sizer Technology. The unique principles are the 3-stage breaking action, rotating screen effect, and the deep scroll tooth pattern. The tooth geometry subjects the material to bending, tension and shear forces reducing material in a quick effective 3-stage breaking action. The interlaced rotor design provides pockets for undersize material to fall freely through the machine without further degradation and power usage. Thus the specific power consumption is much lower which contributes to cost efficiency.

What are USP of your Sizer Technology?

MMD Twin Shaft Mineral Sizer breaks the materials by bending, tension and shear forces rather than compression forces. Due to Sizer Technology, the interlaced rotor design provides pockets for undersize material to fall freely through the machine without further degradation, minimising fines production and wear while maximising production. The deep scroll draws material along the shafts to utilise the full length and capacity of the Sizer. This feature also agitates the material around the machine to deliver the optimum breaking position.

We have developed a range of Sizers – from 200 series through to 1500 series with an array of unique changeable tooth profiles and options, to efficiently deliver the product size and throughput a customer requires.

What makes them suitable for under-ground as well as open pit applications?

Founded by Alan Potts, Mining Machinery Developments (MMD) was setup in 1978 to design and produce mining solutions for the underground UK coal industry, initially designing and manufacturing inline breakers.

Although inline breakers for the coal industry we’re a great success, MMD did not stand still with this technology and went on to invent and patent the twin shaft mineral Sizer, producing the first ever 500 Series Sizer in 1980. Sizers were quickly adopted throughout the underground UK coal network. In 1985 first track mounted Mobile Sizer (underground unit) was introduced. With the Sizer tried and tested in many applications, MMD developed track mounted stage loader’s and feeder breaker’s for underground coal applications, providing a reliable mobile alternative to the original inline breaker. The machine is compact in size and easy to handle.

How do you see the acceptance of ‘Green’ mining in India?

“Green” has never been a new word or a passing fad for MMD – recognised as global leaders in In-Pit Sizing & Conveying technology (IPSC), the company have been providing greener and more cost-effective solutions for operators worldwide for over 38 years.

In-Pit Sizing and Conveying (IPSC) systems are a cost-effective and safer alternative to discontinuous material haulage by dump trucks; reducing operating costs, improving safety, and reducing CO2 emissions, dust, and noise pollution. Employing either fully mobile, semi mobile or static Sizer units in conjunction with conveyors, IPSC efficiently processes and transports material out of the mine.

MMD has been producing semi-mobile IPSC units since the early 1980’s generally fed by a small fleet of trucks transporting material short distances from the mine face. The Sizer unit reduces material in preparation for efficient conveyor haulage out of the mine. As the mining face progresses these units are relocated occasionally to minimise the truck haulage distance.

In India, MMD is continuously making industry awareness of IPSC to promote the green mining solutions. Industries are showing their keen interests to implement this technology and I hope we shall able to succeed to welcome this technology in or before 2020.

Features of MMD Sizers

Accurately sized product / minimal fines:  MMD Sizer controls the product size in all three dimensions while minimising the generation of dust and fine material.

Shock protection: Incorporates shock protection, preventing the machine from sustaining damage by steel or other unbreakable material.

Minimal support structure: Requires very little supporting structure, providing high installation flexibility in fixed, semi-mobile or mobile units, whether mounted on a new installation or retrofitted onto an existing one.

Safe automated operation: Designed to deliver simple operation and maintenance to promote a safe working environment. The Sizer can be remotely controlled and monitored and is also available fully automated to ensure continuous optimal performance.

Reject facility: The deep scroll action inherently provides all MMD Sizers the ability to automatically reject oversize material.
