An overview on which system is best for high-rise cooling.

Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is to create and maintain a comfortable environment within a building. A comfortable environment is much more than a temperature and humidity. There are factors that matters for a better environment that include adequate lighting and proper furniture, cleanliness of the air, noise levels, work surfaces etc.

When it comes to the selection of the appropriate HVAC system for a given building, there are key factors that influence the selection of the HVAC system i.e. preference of the building owner; available construction budget, size and shape of the building, function of the building, life-cycle cost, ease-of-operation and maintenance etc. Here, we outline the system which is best for high-rise cooling.

CSVH3 compact screw compressor

Harvinder Bhatia, Managing Director, BITZER India, says, “Around one quarter of BITZER compact screw compressors is set up in high-rise cooling applications. At ACREX 2016, we won the ACREX award with our CSVH3 compressors – a compressor series that is particularly suitable for high-rise cooling. Thanks to its integrated refrigerant-cooled frequency inverters and outstanding seasonal efficiency (IPLV) values in particular, it knew just how to convince in the category Green Products, being exceptionally eco-friendly.”

He adds, “The CSVH3 compact screw compressor has a cooling capacity of up to700 kW (+5/50 C) with R134a and a displacement of up to 1156 cu.m per hour. The CSVH3 with its integrated variable speed drive sets new efficiency standards in the area of air-cooled liquid chillers equipped with screw compressor technology. The series is especially suited to systems with a high part-load and also boasts impressive, further improved IPLV and COP values.”

This compressor series simplifies installation and offers high operating reliability of speed-controlled compact screw compressors in high-temperature ranges, in process cooling and in heat pump applications. This is achieved thanks to sensors that protect and monitor the compressor, solenoid valves (Vi control and refrigerant injection in a single prewired package) and the integrated frequency inverter. The latter’s soft-start function results in a steady increase in the starting current and prevents current peaks.

Bhatia informs, “The CSVH3 monitors its application limits itself: if it exceeds the defined parameters, the BITZER compressor initially gives a warning, then switches off automatically in the event of a sustained overload. The compressors communicate with the overarching control of the system as a whole by means of a Modbus.”

Variable speed technology

Danfoss’ expertise in the cooling industry spans over 9 decades wherein the company have been focussed on making modern life easier by providing effective technology and solutions that energy efficient thereby reducing the environmental and economic cost across industries. Ravichandran Purushothaman, President, Danfoss India, says, “In air conditioning, our latest innovation is the variable speed technology, by which the compressor works with a variable frequency drive and the system runs on different frequencies to match varying load requirements. This helps in saving power to the tune of 25 per cent, be it for industrial or residential use.”

He adds, “With the right kind of technology, it is possible to explore avenues for every building to be converted to a green building. Our latest innovations such as the VLT HVAC drives, pressure and temperature valves, and controls aiding in building infrastructure the smart way and ensure that buildings ‘get more out of less’ through efficient utilisation of energy.”

Purushothaman feels the government initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ have helped in the creation and promotion of new technologies which have contributed to increasing the global competitiveness within the industry.

Turbocor oil-free centrifugal compressor

The company is proud of its Turbocor compressor that was developed as a part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The award winning application is a high-efficiency oil-free centrifugal compressor that can provide extremely high energy savings for HVAC systems. He informs, “It has the ability to reduce energy consumption up to 35-50 per cent of a commercial HVAC system. This in turn helps in cutting down the overall energy consumption by over 30 per cent.”

Focus on best technology products

Hitachi, being a technology leader and one of the most premium brands in Indian air conditioner industry, is constantly working on new cutting-edge technology in its product categories which comprises of Room AC, VRF, Chillers and other commercial air conditioners. Besides this, the company is also involved in the trading of refrigerators and air purifiers. Gurmeet Singh, Managing Director, Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning India Ltd, informs, “We are constantly working on producing best technology products which consume less energy and deliver best output.”

SET-FREE Kosho Series and Front Flow Series

He adds, “In our VRF system range, which addresses the architects and HVAC consultants, Hitachi has developed a wide range of air-conditioning system (up to 54HP). Our SET-FREE Kyosho Series (Top Flow) and Front Flow Series, offer a holistic approach to air conditioning in modern offices-units that are capable of simultaneously cooling and heating, adapting to the different seasons and various temperature requirements of rooms.”

SET FREE-Sigma Series

In addition to this, Hitachi has also introduced SET FREE-Sigma Series this year. Named after the Mathematical symbol “?” which stands for the combined strengths of Johnson Controls and Hitachi VRF Technologies, this series has been designed globally for Indian climate and customers. It offers higher energy efficiency, engineered aesthetics, enhanced strengths, compact design, compact cooling and heating. Thus, with least energy wastage, maximal capacity in minimalistic floor space, SET FREE-Sigma Series gives energy efficient performance combined with premium looks.

For commercial and industrial requirements, Hitachi’s Screw (air and water) and Centrifugal Chiller Series with R134A refrigerant offers most energy efficient cooling solutions. Singh informs, “Its impressive performance coupled with precise and continuous capacity control technology, user friendly LCD touch panel and high performance compressor, provides cooling with low noise and low vibrations which is ideal for industrial and commercial purposes.”

Hitachi is constantly working on the philosophy of producing best technology products with the three pillars of innovation, energy saving and comfort and it is this, that drives them to deliver and give the best to its consumers. Singh adds, “With our three pronged focussed strategy of quality, innovation and advance technology, Hitachi not only aims to increase the comfort of its consumers by ensuring proper ventilation and thermal comfort in high-rise buildings but also improves human lifestyle with energy efficient, eco-friendly and smart products.”
