How structural steel behaves

PREMIER is an experienced manufacturer and supplier of cold formed hollow sections. Round, square and rectangular structural steel tubes are cold formed and supplied to the market in mild steel, cold rolled steel, high tensile material as well as in pre galvanised material. The preferred designations for structural applications are: Structural Hollow Sections (SHS), Circular Hollow Sections (CHS), and Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS).
These square and rectangular hollow sections are available in different sizes (mm), wall thickness (mm), weight (kg/m) and grades with dimensional tolerances as per international quality standards.
Square & Rectangular Hollow Section
With high torsional rigidity and compressive strength, these hollow sections are comparably more efficient than conventional steel sections. The excellent distribution of material around the axis of the square and rectangular steel hollow sections allows for remarkable strength qualities and thus offers decisive advantages in its applications. The smooth and uniform profile of the sections minimises corrosion and facilitates easy, onsite fabrication to significantly enhance the aesthetics of structures. A higher strength to weight ratio credits these sections with nearly 20 per cent reduction in the use of steel, the manufacturer claims.
Circular Hollow Section
Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) are a type of metal profile with a hollow tubular cross section and excellent resistance to torsion. The wall thickness is uniform around the section, and CHS are commonly used in welded steel frames where members experience loading in multiple directions. The circular hollow sections are efficient shapes for this multiple-axis loading, as they have uniform geometry along two or more cross-sectional axes and thus uniform strength characteristics.
Applications
The applications of structural hollow sections nearly cover all fields. Hollow sections may be used because of the beauty of their shape or to express lightness, while in other cases their geometrical properties determine their application.
Buildings and Halls
In buildings and halls, hollow sections are mainly used for columns and lattice girders or space frames for roofs. In modern architecture, they are also used for other structural or architectural reasons
Bridges
Circular hollow sections can also be used as a flange for plate girders, road pedestrial bridges and railway bridges.
Towers and Masts
Considering wind loading, corrosion protection and architectural appearance, there is no doubt that hollow sections are to be preferred
Offshore Structures
For the support structure, the jacket or tower, not only is the wave loading important, but also other aspects are leading to the use of circular hollow sections.
