What is your take on the steel prices as also the quality of steel which is available in the Indian market for construction and infrastructure purposes?

The price of steel in the industry will be stabilized very soon. The issues in the mining will be resolved and we will see a stable curve. The quality of steel used in construction is still in the doldrums. 25 per cent of the current TMT market is from primary manufacturers and 75 per cent in the secondary market which involves the local players. These players have been producing low-quality steel and the government is taking measures to improve quality.

What is your take on the TMT market dynamics for the year 2021?

The steel market is booming. Construction is actively going on as there is no fear of Covid anymore in the market. The work piled up last year (2020) will surely be completed by this year. There was a delay in stock movement due to the pandemic, and the burden of maintaining warehouses got accumulated. But since, it is taken care of now; work is going on in full swing.

What are some of the factors one should be aware of before selecting a TMT bar?
Below are the primary factors that need to be taken into consideration before selection:

• Check the company declaration for the raw material used to manufacture their TMT rebars. Virgin iron ore/ pellets are used by primary players.
• Check the process of manufacturing: TMT manufactured at an integrated plant using DRI, Electric Arc Furnace and rolling mill (to be end to end) which eliminates the harmful elements like sulphur, phosphorous and gives precision control of chemistry in the refining process.
• Weight of TMT rebar: Primary manufacturers with automatic rolling mills, control the crosssectional weight in TMT rebars.
• Strength and ductility: High strength and elongation with better ductility should be preferred.

Other important features:

• Higher corrosion resistance: The controlled Thermo mechanical treatment also results in a uniform and thick tempered martensitic rim, completely free from internal stress. This martensitic rim (thicker than any other grade) improves the corrosion resistance as well as fatigue strength of the Shyam Steel TMT Re-bars Fe 500 D when compared to other TMT Re-bars.
• Superior bendability: Shyam Steel TMT Re-bars are manufactured by the advanced Thermex process, which results in a tough outer surface and a soft core. This provides the Re-bars good bendability and workability.
• Seismic resistance: Shyam Steel TMT Re-bars support seismic design due to its unique combination of strength, ductility and stress ratio.
• Fire resistance: Shyam Steel TMT Re-bars suffers no loss of strength even at temp as high as 6000 C.
