The Layher Protect-System is a cassette enclosure system for the most stringent requirements when it comes to environmental conservation, traffic protection and noise insulation.

The brand promise made by Layher is the expression of a brand philosophy that we’ve been living by for over 65 years. More speed, more safety, more proximity, more simplicity and more future: values with which we strengthen our customers’ competitiveness in the long term. With our innovative systems and solutions, we’re working all the time on making scaffolding construction even simpler, even more economical and, above all, even safer.

The Layher Protect-System is a cassette enclosure system for the most stringent requirements when it comes to environmental conservation, traffic protection and noise insulation. The airtight connection of the cassettes means they can be used as a dust and noise protection wall, for example during asbestos clearance or restoration work. They can also be used all the year round for buildings, scaffolding covering, façade appearance improvement, event solutions, sandblasting work, partition walls etc.
The Protect-System is compatible with Layher Allround Scaffold equipment. It comprises individual 1 metre high cassettes in the length of the corresponding scaffolding bay, and holders matching the scaffolding system. The individual cassettes are made of profiled aluminium frames which have a galvanised steel sheet attached to them. The cassettes are sealed off from one another by an all-round rubber section. In the case of the translucent cassettes, the steel sheet is replaced by a transparent rib-reinforced panel. The cassettes can also be designed as sound-proofing cassettes by providing an insulation mat on the galvanised steel sheet.

To make sure that their customers were able to shop during renovation work without disturbance. It had to be functional, but at the same time attractive. The solution was the Protect System from Layher. This dustproof enclosure system effectively kept out dust from construction – and looked good as well.

Application Layher Protect System
Shoppers nowadays are looking for adventure, and this has brought a number of changes to the design of shopping centres. They’re no longer just a place to buy things; they’re a place for people to enjoy themselves. The Weser park shopping centre in Bremen, which opened in 1990, reflects this trend: it offers an “Oasis” for wellness, a bowling alley and a cinema called the Crystal Palace. And to remain competitive in the future this shopping centre, one of the largest in northern Germany, is now being renovated and expanded at considerable expense. At the same time, business must continue. In order not to spoil people’s shopping experience during this period a temporary partition wall has been set up to protect them from dust and keep them from entering the construction site by mistake.

This was a challenging task for project, a company specialising in property and project management: Site protection is becoming increasingly important in construction projects, especially in locations like Weserpark which are highly frequented. In order to avoid site shutdowns it is essential to provide protection against the effects of weather, but it was also required to protect pedestrians from dust, noise and falling objects. When the temporary partition wall was erected, the developer had to keep a number of factors in mind: they had to assemble it quickly in order to hold to the schedule and had to give it an attractive appearance in keeping with the prestigious surroundings. These were requirements that ordinary tarpaulins could not fulfil the customer requirement.

The system solution consists of a comprehensive construction kit made up of cassette elements. Depending on the needs, they are provided with a galvanised steel sheet, a translucent plastic ribbed panel or real glass,” explains the project director. “This permits work in daylight conditions and allows visitors to peek behind the scenes. By means of cassettes of different length and special corner elements we can perfectly adapt temporary partitions made from the Protect System to the given geometry. An all-round rubber seal on the cassettes ensures a neat and precisely fitting connection to the adjacent elements. The temporary partitions thus can seal off individual areas and allow operations to continue without obstruction – both in front and behind them.”

Removal of individual wall cassettes
To remove individual wall cassettes, the appropriate upper holders of the wall cassette to be removed must be dismantled and the upper cassette tilted outwards. The lower wall cassette can now be lifted and removed. The removed holders must be bolted back on in their old positions. To remove the cassettes, the handrail of the scaffolding must not be removed, unless the risk assessment by the scaffolding erector calls for further measures to prevent falls.

For the transition from the wall cassettes or translucent cassettes to the building, the ground or the roof, or for corners, the connection profiles can be fastened both horizontally and vertically to the cassettes. The connection profiles permit the connection of a slide-in tarpaulin, metal sheet or wooden board.

The commissioning team, consisted of three sections with a total area of 700 sq.m.. The team first put up Layher Allround Scaffolding as a substructure. The system’s modular structure assured an exact match to the shape of the building, and its ingenious bolt-free wedge head connection technology saved time during assembly. The wall cassettes and real glass cassettes were easy to mount, even in corner areas. To keep disruption of business to a minimum, the scaffolding erectors worked both night and day. Thus the 8-metre-high partition walls were completed in only a week. The result was an efficient site protection structure that provided ideal conditions for renovation and modernisation of the shopping centre.
