Here we discuss the roofing technologies to watch out for in 2018

Roofing plays a very crucial role in the process of construction and maintenance of roof. Over the last few years roofing industry has witnessed a paradigm shift. With increased investment in infrastructure projects, customers are demanding durability; flexibility along with aesthetically pleasing designs.

Corrosion resistant and roof designs can withstand extreme weather

CR Kulkarni, Chief of Sales (Coated Steel) & CQH, Tata BlueScope Steel, says, “Roofing material that is corrosion resistant and roof designs can withstand extreme weather conditions will gain greater attention.”

Kulkarni believes one of the important elements in roofing systems today and future is its ability to reduce thermal heat gain.  Kulkarni informs, “Hence a demand for insulated roofing instead of single skin non insulated roof is anticipated in near future. Thermally efficient roofing material with high-solar reflectivity index (SRI value) would be advantageous. Sustainable construction practices are being adopted by next generation architects and builders; where roofing made CR Kulkarni, Chief of Sales (Coated Steel) & CQH, Tata BlueScope Steelfrom 100 per cent recyclable material and compatible for rain water harvesting would be preferred.”

Kulkarni opines, “Where profiles are concerned, more demand for standing seam over trapezoidal for medium to large projects is sited. This is an obvious choice as more and more designers and architects are looking for aesthetics, flexibility, customisation along with strength and durability. A maintenance free roofing solution that offers complete peace of mind with minimum or no repairs is being preferred for long term economics.”

Aquaproof – A complete environment friendly roofing system

Bindu Joseph, Managing Director, Prime Roofing Solutions Pvt Ltd, says, “With our state-of-the-art technology all the drew’s are fixed on the profile ridges and it is covered with a self clasping sheet covers. And the profile is designed in such a way that even the solar panels can be fixed on top of these sheets without any additional screws.

Aquaproof roofing system

–              100 per cent leak proof

–              No exposed screws

–              Solar panel equipped

–              Available with heat insulation (PUFF)

Aquaproof is 100 per cent leak proof profile sheet equipped for installing solar panel without penetrating the roof sheet. It has self locking caps at alternate ribs (optional at all ribs).

Method of installation

Joseph explains, “First tighten the sheet with screws then fix the shelf locking caps, by presenting on top of ribs making it 100 per cent water proof. It can be laid with Z purlins or box purlins.”

Aquaproof sandwich panels

Aquaproof roofing sheets are available in insulated panels also. Insulation is by rigid polyurethane foam sandwiched between two metal sheets. Panels are available in thickness ranging from 30 mm to 75 mm. It provides a cost effective solution for excellent thermal insulation in steel building for energy conservation.

Aquaproof for solar panels

Joseph informs, “The other main advantage of this roofing system is its compatibility with solar panels. Solar panels can be installed above Aquaproof profile by using special clamps. These clamps can be tightened without penetrating the roofing sheet. Hence even after fixation of solar panels it remains 100 per cent leak proof.”

Aquaproof is a complete environment friendly roofing system; that prevents leak, as no screws are exposed. It prevents heat through insulation. It also enables to fix solar panels without roof penetration.

Maxroof – Build right

Maxroof considered as one of the top most solution providers in metal building systems since inception in year 2006. Having expertise in roofing solutions the company have successfully completed many landmark projects all across India. Sanjeev Rai, Managing Director, Max Roofing Systems Pvt Ltd, says, “Metal roofing today is no longer about hideous corrugated sheets only. New styles, profiles, colours, shapes, textures, designs and innovations like eco-friendly roofs have seen the amelioration of metal roofing in commercial as well as residential architecture.”

Different systems for metal roofing for a warehouse

There are different types of roofing systems that may be used in warehouse and industrial buildings. These tend to fall into some broad categories, which are described in the following sections.
Single-skin trapezoidal sheeting
Single-skin sheeting is widely used in agricultural and industrial structures where no insulation is required. It can generally be used on roof slopes down to as low as 4 provided that the laps and sealants are as recommended by the manufacturers for shallow slopes. The sheeting is fixed directly to the purlins and side rails, and provides positive restraint. In some cases, insulation is suspended directly beneath the sheeting. Also the regular trapezoidal roofing can be done with double skin options as well.

Standing seam sheeting

Standing seam sheeting has concealed fixings and can be fixed in any length. The advantages are that there are no penetrations directly through the sheeting that could lead to water leakage, and fixing is rapid. The fastenings are in the form of clips that hold the sheeting down but allow it to move longitudinally.

Considering the ever increasing demand of standing seam roofing system Maxroof have launched three standing seam roofing profiles MxSeam, MxLok and MxZip. These profiles offer outstanding design potential, performance and durability. Rai opines, “While installing these profiles, sheets are never punctured with screws which make it practically leak proof; No Holes means, No Leaks. Further the seam allows the roof to ‘breathe’ so that any moisture occurring within the roofs evaporates away and entire configuration of roof remains in good conditions throughout its life.”

Standing seam metal roofs get their name from the way that they are built. They are constructed of metal panels that run from your ridge down to the edge of the roof. At the edge of each panel is a tall seam that connects to the next panel anywhere from half inch to one and half inches above the roof so it appears the seam is ‘standing’ which gives this system its characteristic, trendy, modern look. They can be made of steel or aluminum. The most preferred choice of many architects is undoubtedly the galvalume standing seam roofs because of its longer life and cost efficiency.

Standing seam metal roofs can come in a wide variety of different colors, which can complement contemporary to rustic style homes. The benefit of this is that light colors can be used on the roof that can reflect some of the light from the sun, and prevent superheating of the attic.

One distinctive design feature of standing seam is that there are no exposed screws or fasteners, which could become potential sources of leaks.

Manufacturing process

Standing seam panels can either be pre-formed at a manufacturing facility or a sheet metal shop, or site-formed. Site-formed panels are formed from a roll of metal coil, which is fed through special roll-forming machine which crimps the metal into rigid panels. Forming standing seam panels right on the job site offers the advantage of speed, convenience, and makes it possible to form panels of considerable length that would otherwise be difficult to transport.

Consider a standing seam metal roof

Standing seam roofs are gaining quickly in popularity when architects consider their low maintenance, durability, good looks, longevity, and solar heating protection. Key to a long-lasting metal roof is the quality of its installation, therefore make sure you choose really know how to install standing seam and have plenty of past jobs to demonstrate their experience and expertise.

Roof insulation trends

Nilesh Sonawane, Leader – Business Development, Owens Corning India, says, “Roof insulation decision is most important aspect of

building envelop design.” Following points are required to be given careful attention to decide type of insulation:

  • Balance of thermal and acoustics
  • Fire safe performance
  • Resistance to corrosion
  • Installation ease, soft and easy to handle
  • Lesser joints, seamless
  • High strength facer to avoid metal mesh
  • Physical stability for longer duration to avoid sag and granulation
  • Green attributes
