Tekla Structures software was used to model the complex framework, to ensure highly effective detailing and optimised fabrication

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, formerly Sahar International Airport, is the busiest airport in India, and caters to cargo and passenger flights. It has two terminals: the domestic terminal and the international terminal. The domestic terminal includes two terminals: Terminal 1A and Terminal 1B. After the expansion and modification of Terminal 1B it was opened to the public on September 17th 2007. Pratibha Pipes & Structural and its associates used Tekla Structures software to model this complex framework, thus ensuring highly effective detailing and optimised fabrication of this exceptional structure.

Domestic Terminal 1B
Terminal 1B with an area of 45,000 sq. metres was modified to meet the growing demands of air traffic. With the advent of new airlines and the increasing operations of the existing airlines the current terminal was found to be inadequate. Hence modification was undertaken to expand the terminal and modify the existing terminal to optimise the requirements for the coming decades and provide world-class facilities to passengers. This terminal building has been described, a marvel of design, engineering, and technology in India.

Combining structural elements is easy
Tekla Structures was used for modeling and detailing of the entire structure. The main feature of the project was its shape, the shape of a rafter. Tekla Structures made it simple and easy to complete the project within the specified time. It took around 15 days for the detailers to fix the geometry of the rafter as per the requirement of architect and client. The capsule – shaped two plates were welded to join with each other thus giving the shape to the rafter. A single truss was made of 8 segments of capsule – shaped plates.

“Placing the purlin on curvature of the main rafter and all welded connections was made easy with Tekla Structures to give aesthetic look to this massive structures ”, says Ajay Kulkarni, Managing Director, Pratibha Pipes & Structural. He also adds, “Detailing of the model using Tekla Structures software made fabrication and erection easier and helped us fix our erection methodology for the structure.”

Tekla Structures – intelligent 3D modeling
Tekla Corporation in brief
Tekla is an international software company whose model-based software products make customers’ core processes more effective in building and construction, energy distribution, infrastructure management, and water supply. Tekla Corporation has area offices and partner organisations worldwide. International operations account for some 80 per cent of net sales. Founded in 1966, Tekla is one of the oldest software companies in Finland.

Tekla Structures
Tekla Structures is a building information modeling (BIM) software that streamlines the delivery process of design, detailing, fabrication, and construction organisations. Its ability to process extensive amounts of data enable the creation of accurately detailed and highly constructable 3D and 4D models that apply to every stage of design and construction and represent the ‘as-built’ condition of a building. Tekla Structures effectively integrates into any best-of-breed software driven collaborative workflow, which is the key to minimising errors and maximising efficiency, resulting in high profitability and on-time project completion. Tekla Structures encompasses specialised configurations for structural engineers, steel detailers and fabricators, precast concrete detailers and manufacturers, as well as for construction management.

“Detailing of the model using Tekla Structures software made fabrication and erection easier and helped us fix our erection methodology for the structure.”
