Abrasive blasting or sand blasting or shot blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure or velocity to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface, or remove surface contaminants like scales, rust foreign depositions etc.Abrasive blasting or sand blasting or shot blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure or velocity to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface, or remove surface contaminants like scales, rust foreign depositions etc.

Abrasive means various types of blasting media e.g. steel shots, steel grits, aluminium oxide, chilled iron grit, chilled iron shots, sand, copper slag etc. however sand blasting is banned as per factory rules regulations.
Even glass bead is a type of abrasive and process is called as glass bead blasting which is being used to smoothen the surface or to improve the surface finish of the components. Also being used for deburring (to remove fine grinding burrs), to clean the foreign deposition on the surface of dies, moulds etc to improve surface finish of stainless steel components is another application.

Steel grit, steel shots, aluminium oxide, CI grit etc are being used mainly on MS components for surface preparation prior to painting or coating. A visual inspection standard for surface preparation by blasting process is SA 2 ½ or SA 3. It is a Swedish Standard accepted worldwide. The standard says:• SA-2 ½: Cleaning the substrate using abrasive blasting process to achieve near white surface and free from rust, oil and foreign depositions.• SA-3: Cleaning the substrate using abrasive blasting machine to full white metal surface free from all kinds of depositions, rust, oil etc.

Shot blasting is also used for removal of scales on castings, forgings etc after casting and forging operation. Mainly wheel or turbine type shot blasting machine is used for this process. Though it gives very high productivity compare with air operated shot blasting machine, it has a limitation like internal and intricate areas cannot get blasted, very huge components cannot be blasted by this process.

Various types of wheel or impeller type shot blasting machines are available which mainly include:• Table type shot blasting machines• Hanger type shot blasting machines• Belt tumbler type or tumblast shot blasting machine• Tunnel type shot blasting machines.Depending upon the size and type of the job, purpose of blasting, and productivity, machine is being selected.

National Enterprises is a manufacturer of all types of wheel type shot blasting machines, air-operated abrasive blasting and glass bead blasting machines having offices all over India and team of highly experienced technocrats with efficient design and production facility.
